Wierd sound from exhaust
Hey everyone. I dont post much even though im here almost everyday (lol wanna take a shot at what that means?) Anyway I was up all night searching and it has now come to this. I just recently replaced valve stem seals (and a few other things
) and never could have even thought about doing it without this site mind you. While getting in there, I removed all the emissions junk over the passenger valve cover. I thought that i put it all back together pretty well except for one piece. I couldnt find the hose that attaches to that top opening on the diverter control valve box thing. This hose runs down to number 6 in the picture below. I havnt for the life of me been able to find a common name for this thing. The picture describes it as the "control valve silencer". So ive been running everything with this and the hose that runs to it disconnected.
Anyway at idle I now have this ugly sound of puffing air coming out of my exhaust. It is completely over powering the normal good ole gurgling sound that we all love. I can barely hear it. Anyone know y i would be getting a sound like that? Thanks everyone.

Cool thanks man. The only problem is I can't find a common name for that silencer piece so that i can buy a new one. I know i could just go to a junkyard and get one but junkyard TPIs are hard to come by around here. Plus id rather save the hassle of going out to the junkyards (there not very close to where i live) and just buy a new one if theyre cheap enough.
Still though, why would the air be going straight from the pump out the exhaust?
Edit: lol I know that sounds kinda dumb. What that means is "why would it cause that sound?"

I think most of the A.I.R. hose is 5/8". If this is the same size, through a piece of 5/8 heater hose on and see if it solves the problem. If not, a bad A.I.R. check valve makes a puffing noise without the hose on. You might have something loose or incorrectly hooked up.

It wouldnt suprise me if something in that air system werent hooked up right. But doesnt that hose have to hook on to that silencer peice? Otherwise, just slapping an open hose onto the valve seems like it wouldnt be making any difference.

Lol sorry dude. Now that i read my original post i can see that I didnt make that very clear. I dont have the silencer either.
Edit : Did some more research and....i guess this thing is officially called the silencer. I found 2 sites that might sell them and a pic. Just to be certain.....this piece(in the pic) connects to that pipe going to the smog pump and a hose runs from it to the top of the air management valve right?

AC Delco part no. 219-154
This still confuses me though. Why would the air that is supposed to be deverted into the silencer, being diverted out into the engine bay effect whats coming out of the exhaust?
