cat glows red hot on idle!

Wow...long time no see. Anyway, here's what I've got...

383 stroker
RPM Airgap intake
Holley 670 cfm Street Aveneger carb
SLP 1 3/4" headers to 3" y-pipe
high-flow Catco cat
3" I-pipe
Flowmaster muffler

Everything is fresh and new. The cat glows red hot on idle. Anyone seen this before? It's pretty freaky. Any thoughts on how one might go about resolving this pesky little issue?

Anytime I've ever heard of a cat glowing red was when it was bad/clogged. My buddy also had that problem, but he was running too lean. He said when he fixed the lean condition, it stopped glowing red.

Could be......thats the only time I have ever heard of them getting cherry red is when they are plugged, or otherwise not flowing properly

I had this happen on my wifes old 88 buick regal we once had. It was running very rich (bad coil pack) and it was glowing cherry red. I figured that the extra fuel in the exhaust was heating the cat up much hotter than normal and caused the glowing.

I had this problem before with my camaro. The carb was dumping way more fuel than it could burn due to a blown power valve. The excess fuel ignites in the cat due to the extreme temp which is it's whole purpose in the first place. I got one so hot that the welded seems split. A new power valve, spark plugs and wires, coil, and cat later, I was good to go.

Its running really rich. The coverter is red hot because it is trying to burn all the excess fuel. It also could be a dead cylinder dumping fuel as well. Make sure your not missfireing if not backprobe the 02 sensor and see how rich it is running. Then take off the cat and look at it.
