Longtubes - Yea or Nah?
Hey.
Just wondering if it would even be worth the time and hassle to swap over to longtubes.
I currently have Edelbrock TES headers to a 3" catback with a hooker muffler.
Engine combonation is:
357 CI
9.8:1~ compression
Holley Stealth Ram
Edelbrock Performer PRM straight plug heads
Comp Cams XE 224/230 Hydraulic cam. .510/.513 lift with Crane Gold RR's.
Yank 3400 stall.
I was thinking of going with the Hedman Elite Longtubes.
My concern is whether or not it's worth my while. I would have to fabricate a Y-Pipe. If this is going to only gain me a tenth or so in the 1/4 it isn't worth my while.
What are your opinions or maybe your actual experience when going from ****ty edelbrock headers to long tubes?
Thanks!

i think long tubes and true duals would be worth your time. if you're going Y-pipe and 3" catback anways, then SLP shorties would be the best bet in my opinion.

Just remeber that going to a longtube of the same diameter simulates the effect of haveing a smaller primary. If you can I would step up to the SLP 1.75 "headers . They breath awsome up top . If you are bent an a big *** flowing exhasut get the muflex 4"system . It's more than you will ever need

I've also been kicking this around so I'll chime in here with a question.
A few of you have said it's worth it, but no one has posted any info. ...if even "butt dyno" info. Being a little lowered, I'm a little agains doing longtubes. I also have to wonder about the headers being too much for "average" engines. Maybe not TOO much, but maybe overkill?
Cost vs. labor/effort vs. actual gains
I'm curious.

For most street applications, they're probably not worth the effort and loss of ground clearance.

I don't see the need for longtubes. Heck , I haveno idea why anyone with TPI would want them , we already have enough lowend grunt. I think alot of people are sold under the misteak of longtubes being better performers , which is not the case at all.

I have my longtube hedders on a stock LG4. I bought the hedders and two straight pipes with bullet mufflers of a member here for $125. Then I took it to and exhaust shop and had them modify it to fit my car a little better and allow more ground clearence. They also put some turndowns on the end, all together is was another $50. The exhaust ends at about the back of my door. So for $175 I have a full true dual exhaust set up that sounds awesome and gave a good difference in power. Ground clearance isn't the best but I have never scraped anything in everyday driving, and I can pull in and out of my drive way with no problem.

I took a look under my car and I will have hardly any ground clearance if I go longtubes. I can barely even fit a pop can under my transmission pan. I'd have about 2" of ground clearance with the pipes running under the crossmember. I looked to see if I could notch the crossmember but on a 700r4 hardly any room would be gained.
I measured my I-Pipe with my digital capilers and its actually 2.75" not 3" like I was told when I bought the car. The Y-Pipe for the headers is also only 2.25" and is also crush bent so it goes under 2.0) in the bends...
Now i'm not sure what i'm going to do. All I know is i'm probably loosing quite a bit of HP with this setup.
