TES Headers from Edelbrock

These are the Tubular Exaust System headers from Edelbrock. They are supposed to be 50-state street legal with all the correct emmisions hook-ups. I'm looking at buying a pair for my 84 T/A but have some questions as to whether they are a direct bolt in. Has anyone used these for their cars? Can you pass on your experience with installing them and how they affect how the car runs? Thanks!

Get yourself a set of Hooker 2055's instead. Much better headers and offer better spark plug and wire access. But if you're dead set on a set of Edelcrock's, get the ones for an L69 engine. The LG4 models have a 2.5" outlet which restricts exhaust flow the same as manifolds do. The L69 models have a 3" outlet, like the Hooker 2055's do.

I will definitely get the ones for the L69 since that's what I've got. I'm not "stuck" on the Edelbrock headers, those are just the only ones I've seen that are cut to be direct bolt in and are fully emmisions legal. I will take a look at those headers from hooker as well. Also, I plan on upgrading to a 350/383 sometime within the next year, probably next spring. Will these headers work for that motor as well?

You can get the hookers uncoated for a little less than the edlebrocks. But edlebrock is probably the cheapest ceramic coated header, Ive had both and prefer the hookers.

So why the hookers? Same reasons as posted above?

I have the edelbrocks on my car, and that's only because I got them dirt cheap and they are still an improvement over cast manifolds. I'm upgrading to Hooker LTs when I can afford them.

The edelbrocks are just built crappy. The AIR tubes stick down into the primary pipe as much as a 1/4", obstructing airflow out of the head, and the collector on them pinches each primary way down, rather than making a smooth transition like they should.

Wow, thanks for that update. Knowing that, it looks like the hookers are the way to go.

call american coating specialties. The number is in the first sticky, first page.

coated 2055's they say are 240 and the y pipe coated in like 95 (335).
Which should put it a bit cheaper than the eddys (399 +64).

i'll be dropping my edelbrocks in as soon as i get off this computer, i got em for the reason of ground clearance, with the airride i'd more than likely be setting the car on the headers with long tubes,.....i'll let ya know how it goes

my install was a piece of cake, 2 hours at the most, of course all i have on the motor are heads right now so i didnt have to move everything, i could have used an extra set of hands on the ypipe but with my oil pan upside down and a 5qt bottle on top i was able to get the bolts started, i really like how the ypipe fits up on em.....works out great for those of us with ground clearance issues

I just installed TES headers in my '90 IROC.

Didn't take no two hours more like 10-12 hours. Just alot of stuff in the way and the A/C made it a real challenge.

Now that I know how to do it I figure it could easily be done in half that time.

Hindsight eh?

So those of you with the Edelbrock headers, are they worth it or should I look into the set of Hookers? (wow, that sounded good). With what people have been saying about how the stove pipe is and how it goes down into the primary and all? Does the set from Hooker do the same thing? From what's said, it seems like for the price, you can't beat the set from Edelbrock, but they aren't the best ones to get. I'm just trying to make the right decision before I spend a lot of money.

well how much you want to spend? You can spend as much as you want on headers just add money and stir.

I have eye balled a dyno run on a '91 3rd gen loaded up with SLPs that only saw 7 rwhp. So get hookers and add another 1 rwhp. Get edelbrocks and only see 6rwhp.

I put headers in cause I like the sound.

I'm going to put headers on because I'm tired of the plain Manifold. I also need to have the ones that are emissions legal which is why I was looking at the Edelbrock set up in the first place. That's when a whole bunch of people came out and said "hold up, the Hookers are better"...so I guess that's my question and why I was asking for people's experience. I'll probably end up with the Edelbrock set up simply because it's several hundred dollars cheaper.

Let me tell ya i did mine last weekend, keep in mind all thats in there is the shortblock with the heads on, the harnesses are loose in there everything else is off, do a search for my name and you cna see some pics...of the headers and ypipe installed too.....

With everything out of the bay basically i had the headers on and all snugged in about 45 minutes, i did the ypipe sunday because by the time i had teh headers done sat it was late, spent the day cleaning and painting after i got the heads on....

Ypipe took about 30 minutes, i did find out the edelbrock directions were really confusing so i just said the hell with em and installed headers like we always have, kinda figure it out, they're not bad, make sure to put the pass side of the ypipe on first then slip the drivers extension on and bolt to the header on the drivers side

I havent started teh car yet, still getting the motor together but i must say so far i liek em, i reall ylike the routing of the ypipe, it fits very well if not better i think than the stocker, and i dont know about you but through my pass wheel well those two pipes going into the collector looks nasty cool
