Hedman Headers - Ypipe...DOH!
I don't have exact information for you guys yet since I lost my receipts for my parts that I purchased. Basically I have a 92' Firebird Formula WS6. I've done few but handy mods to the car inluding:
New MSD Coil, MSD 8.5mm Plug wires, new plugs (I think I went Bosch), 3' exhaust all the way back, removed my CAT, Hedman Headers and (suppodedly) matching y-pipe for single out. I also have an Air Foil Diverter, and did a Throttle Body bypass. No chip burning has been done, Stock motor, stock Tranny, and rear. K&N filter is Right on my Throttle Body (TPI intake) since I bought it that way and havn't purchased or made a Cold Air Intake system. I don't think I forgot anything..but maybe.
I hope to figure out which part #s I bought but I can't yet. It was the Hedman Header that fit my car (suppodedly) with AIR Tubes. It did not have a placement for the 02 sensor though I thought it was supposed to. Since It did not, I had to make one. Once that was done I went to put on the Y-pipe.....HHUUUUUGGGEEE Pain in the butt. It was like it just did not want to fit for anything. I made it fit but now I see what's wrong.
It's been this way for over 1 1/2 years now and I need to fix this. I have less than 3cm clearance between my oil pan and my y-pipe. A friend suggested that I"m probably boiling my oil. Now, since I don't have pictures yet try to visualise that and the following. My 3" collecter on the passenger side connects to the Y-pipe. Directly after that connection (where both pipes from both headers connect to form 1 pipe) the pipe is touching my Frame. Now, it's not just touching...it's pressed so firmly against my frame that I couldn't fit a piece of paper through and my friend and I had to use a crowbar to move it back just enouph to wrap thick wool heat wrapping to soften the metal on metal grinding.
I've not been able to find a way to fix this other than may I just bought the wrong y-pipe... It's horrible. I looked again and there is a 3" gap between my y-pipe and my crossmember so I don't know why this design has it at 3cm from my Oil pan when It should be set farther back. I know this post looks scratchy and not organized but I"m in a bit of a rush and trying to figure out what I need to do to fix this problem. If you need any more info just ask.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is...did I possibly order the wrong part from hedman? Or is 92's frame a bit different and/or not something hedman made parts specifically for. Is there the option of having one custom made or did I just buy the wrong thing? Thanks
Ok. I believe it was one of these Y-pipes that I purchased. I'm almost certain. I bought Hedman Shorty headers and a y-pipe that was supposed to fit. However it touches my frame, and now has a hole in the pipe. I also have no clearance at my oil pan. I believe these are the parts I bought.
Here is the Y-pipe.

I have this EXACT problem as you do right now man. My car has been off the road for weeks because of this same stupid y-pipe. I have almost the same problem as you are describing exactly, and I need someone to give us some advice too. This y-pipe is JUNK!

I'm on the phone with Hedman and I need to figure out my exact part # or they can't help me. They said that if I have the part # of both then they will help me work through the problem and fix it or get the correct parts. With the parts that I linked he said those were correct and should fit. However I can't verify that since I"m not 100% on them being the right part #s. I'll get back once I figure it out. Any info from any here would be great too. Thanks

Alright man let me know how it goes, but you probably have the right parts though because I know mine are right and they do not fit at all barely.

Does anyone know where on the Hedman Header I can find the part #? It should be printed on it somewhere but I can't find it...

I dont think they are on the header itself. I have a set of Hedman Shorty Headers made for our cars, with the matching Y-pipe, both uninstalled and these are the part numbers I ordered:
Headers: 68470
Y-Pipe: 17470
I ordered the Y-Pipe out of Summit Racing, and picked up the headers coated form Jet-Hot. Hope this helps!

Had the same exact problem when I put my Hedman headers y-pipe on and what I did is use a couple exhaust doughnuts that were made for a Cadillac V-8 years 1990-93. Fel Pro number 60854. They gave me the added clearance needed and all I did was use longer bolts with locknuts and a little Locktite to keep them from vibrating loosed. I also put a little exhaust sealant on the doughnuts prior to assembly to make sure I had a tight seal. Works perfectly..

i bought a set of flowtech shorties with the flowtech y pipe put them on a year and a half ago no problems pulled my motor this winter and when i got it back in went to put my headers on the y-pipe was hitting the oil pan and couldnt figure it out (maybe warpped them or somethig) so i went and did a warranty exchange on them for some new one got the new ones and they fit the same way right on the oil pan..........then i figured it out when i had my motor apart i put on a new oil pan and the new pan comes down sharpper then the old one that seemed like it was on more of a slant maybe thats the problem i was having and maybe for some of you if it has a new (aftermarket) oil pan on it

You know to be honest..the motor mounts I'm sure have never been changed or replaced. I had to take them out when I installed the Headers but I never gave them a look over. How would I check now to see if their condition is any good? I still cannot for the life of my find my part # on the header. unklechuckles19 the part # you showed is the same "type" of header I have except mine came with the AIR attachments..of which I now want to block off or cut away and weld. Anyway...some sort of thing but it's too late for my Y-pipe now because I'm sure there is a hole in it from being against my frame. I have an exhaust leak up there and It's the only part that I can think of that would be causing it...

I had a bit of a problem with my hedman y-pipe. The y-pipe was not quite long enough (on the downtube part if that makes sense), and it wouldn't clear the crossmember. This was on my 1992 camaro - I had no problem on my 1990 Camaro.
However, the headers came with 2 adapters - sized to go from a smaller pipe (like 2.5 inches) to a larger pipe (like 3 inches). I took these, and the y-pipe to a welder, had them cut 2 inches in length from the larger half of the adapters with a hacksaw, and weld these two 2inch pieces inside the flange on the y-pipe (where the y connects to the header), then grind the original y-pipe flange off. The collector bolt plate (plate with 3 holes) then slid right over the grounded and welded part, and mashed against the new flange created by the large end of the adapter (the piece cut at a 2inch length).
This basically extended the y-pipe length almost 2 inches, allowing sufficient clearance of the crossmember in the car. Sorry no pics - no digital cam.
Maybe this will help some of you.
The Hedmann site doesn't include the 1992 year in their list of part numbers and applications - maybe there is a small difference in 1992 for some reason. As well, although everyone (ie Summit, Jeg's) says that Y-pipe will work with all 3rd gen F-bod Hedmann shorty headers, Hedman themselves only claim the y-pipe works with only 1 of their part number headers. The headers I got were the coated shorties, no AIR and no O2 - and it definitely wasn't suggested by Hedmann to use this Y-pipe, but I made it work since there is no specific Y-pipe available. I agree Hedmann does fall short on the availability of Y-pipes for their headers - but my wallet couldn't afford anything else coated.
