Catalytic converter and sound
Just wondering how much of a sound change expected from changing converter.Ive been through many exhaust options and they werent loud enough. So muffler shop told me get a new converter? So i was just curious

i have a dynomax 2.5" catback and a few weeks ago i gutted my cat. before my car was throatier than stock but not too much for attention. now that the cat has been gutted now i can hear more noise inside the car, made it a bit louder from the outside, but everyone now says it sounds a lot more aggressive.

You should see a nice sound increase if you're going from a stock old cat to a new high-flow, or a gutted one.

if you are a do it yourselfer you can just pull the old cat off which wasnt easy in my case then bust the living **** out of the inside of the cat and shake and pull it out in pieces o and btw dont breathe it in. but people did notice it didnt make mine too much louder though but then again i only drive it im never on the outside while its running so i could be wrong....
Removing/gutting the cat really won't make the car THAT much louder (just a tad), more than anything, ditching the cat will change the tone of your exhaust. Under any kind of acceleration (but especially flat-out) the car will sound a lot "raspier"
When you rev the motor in neutral or in park, you'll hear all sorts of popping and farting. This also happens under de-aceleration. Kind of embarrising actually in my opinion, 'cause for those who don't know any better (99% of the people around you) they'll think there's something wrong with your car.
But, some people are just looking for the loudest possible sound (regardless of whether or not it sounds good) so to each his own I suppose.
On the other hand, if you've got a big lumpy cam, with a lot of duration, removing the cat will actualy make the car sound better. If you're strickly stock/bolt-ons, just get a high flow cat instead. You'll have a nice, smooth, "refined" sound that's a lot cleaner sounding than running an straight pipe. Not to mention you'll probably be making more torque.
Choice is yours.

This seems to be an issue more with cars with straight through mufflers and no cat.

A new cat will definetly change the sound for the better. I put an 80 series on my car with the stock cat and I pipe, it sounded absolutly no different than stock. A couple weeks later i put on a free flowing cat and a new I pipe, it sounded 100% different, and a LOT louder.

my gutted cat never has popped or cracked and it just made the car a little bit louder and just made it a more agressive tone and this is on a stock little 305 with just a super turbo cat back.
