trying to make a sidepipe

trying to make a sidepipe

i am redoing my stock exhuast on my 89 camaro and i was wondering if i could do a single sidepipe on the passenger side setup and have enough ground clearance. what do you think?

i cut off the cat already and i was planning on using a glasspack which are relativly small hieght wise.

Axle/Gears: 10 bolt 2.77 open
it can be done, but wouldn't a single sidepipe look kind of awkward? i just ran a glasspack within the intermediate pipe along the driveshaft, and then dumped over the rearend.

i can easilly do a single rear or even a dual rear coming out of the glasspack, i was just tihnkin that would be kinda neat to have.

what kinda glasspack were you thinking of using? coz a red cherry bomb on the side of the car would look kinda gay imo, but if you were really set on a sidepipe i would make it plural and do one on each side for a little symmetryyou could even go so far as to do a custom y pipe and have true duals. might sound better, and if you're made of money instead of using the glasspacks use a couple of chambered mufflers, usually have the same kind of dimensions as a glass pack but sound better, that kind of a setup might really sound pretty sick! i'd just be sure to have some kind of a crossover to connect the two pipes and equal out the exhaust flow.

yeah, im deffinatly nt made of money, lol. only 17 and i need to get a real job now to start paying for parts. I was wanting to get my exhuast done by tuesday to drive my car to school. Iv been telling everybody about it, but i keep driving my parents suburban to school jsut because i dont have everything done to it yet.

but back to the point, yeah, i was planning on using a thrush glasspack(i tihnk that was the breand) and yeah, it is a red tube. but i thought i might be able to get it clos enough to thebody to not make it visible. to have a sidepipe if i chose to do that on the drivers side too, i would have to run piping stright from the y pipe? not from the stock cat position, correct?

becareful with exhuast mods of that nature. Side pipes are illegal on cars/trucks with back seats. Thats why corvettes could have them. No back seat.

i live in florida, it seems that no one cares about emmisions and exhuast of that nature on cars, although, i could be wrong

i don't think that sidepipes are illegal in all 50 states, i saw a 3rd gen firebird before that had sidepipes on it

if you're going to do sidepipes that's what i'd do, and if you're going to do dual pipes i would make a custom y-pipe. if you only have one connected after the cat it'd mess up the flow of the exhaust, because one bank of cylinders would be more free flowing than the other. just run the glasspack along the driveshaft in the intermediate pipe.

I did that a few years ago, but I kept it all tucked up under the car with a turnout by the rear tire. It sounded great.. only reason I got rid of it was because I used 2.5" pipe, and the factory Y-pipe and manifolds. I replaced it with a 3" Hooker system, and some headers and new Y-pipe. New setup makes more power.

That said... with a set of headers, good Y-pipe, and a 3" single pipe with a turnout, it would make plenty of power, and sound absolutely nasty like mine did. Best sounding single exhaust I ever heard on a SBC, IMO.

i have no cat anymore anyways. i just went ahead and did a glasspack witha single out coming out the back, amazingly, it fit perfectly with where we cut the cat out, so we reworked the back of the pipes, and i have a single pipe out back. it was simple and cheap, and saved time. as soon as i come up with a good system for sidepipes(and soe money) i will do it

oh yeah, and as a side note, if i put pipes like that on my car, i think id have like half an inch of clearance or less. my camaro is really low, lol

legally to pass inspection, the exhaust has to be exiting underneath all "passenger compartments" and the trunk is also considered a passenger compartment. having sidepipes, i dont see why that is illegal, the exhaust is exiting away from the vehicle, and isnt being dumped underneath it (btw im a inspector)

Why rush it? why not just drive it to school like it is and as you get $$$ do GOOD work to it. I think you'd probably be happier in the long run if you save your money, drive the car to school like it is even if its not done, and then when you have the money, do the exhaust RIGHT?
