Exhaust Question...

Hello all,

I am in the process of building up my 91 RS and I am having a time trying to decide which way to go with the exhaust.

I am having a 383 built and it will have a D1SC on it. I want it to make at least 600HP. But will the exhaust be able to keep up?

I cant decide between Hooker LT's, Mufflex Y-pipe, and 4" aMufflex exhaust -OR- SLP 1 3/4 shorties, high-flow cat, and a 4" Mufflex exhaust.

I live in Maryland and my car isnt old enough to qualify for historic or street-rod tags. Which means I have to go through emissions every two years.

Should I just settle for the LEGAL exhaust? Will it be able to handle 600HP? Or should I buck the system and go LT's

HELP!!!

If you plan on making that serious power, I'd go true duals with 2.75-3" piping.

I considered that option also but I still have to fight the emissions devil...

What are you concerned about? Failing for the visual or failing for the readings? The exhaust system is not going to affect your readings, and ACTUALLY, when they do the sniffer test, they will only be reading one half of your motor. Now, I'm not sure if they read ratio, or volume, but if it is the latter, you'll pass because they are only getting a half of a reading.

As for worrying about the visual, as long as you have catalytic converters, it shouldnt matter. Pick up two high flow ones from CATCO and call it a day.

Yeah, they do visually inspect it for cats. They seem to do it more for "high performance" cars. They didnt check my GTP though. I guess since its an OBD2 car, they only rely on what the scanner tells them. I dont even have a cat on the GTP .

Thanks!

They visually inspect around here, too. Last time the guy almost crawled under to check for the cats and whatnot. Of course California isn't the friendliest when it comes to emissions control, to begin with.

i'd say go the legal way.. less hassle because you will have to somehow get cats on there when you go for emissions.. and a 4" will be more than enough.. i run 2.5" true duals on 500hp.. it has a smaller area than a single 4"..

Hmmm...

I spoke to someone at Mufflex and they stated that they can make a custom Y-Pipe if I bring the car up to them.

Long-tubes it is!!!
