Re: how restrictive??

You don't have stock headers, you have stock manifolds. They're not completely unfortunate as far as manifolds go, but they're vastly inferior to headers.

Re: how restrictive??

ok and one last thing. i searched on the forums but didnt find much. shorty headers give u more back pressure than full length one corrct? with that said do u get more torgue with shorties and less hp? and one last thing do we not lose any torque with full length headers?

Pretty much with any more free flowing in the exhaust system is going to lose a little bit of torque but gain a little bit of hp, not even sure if it is enough to notice.

Re: how restrictive??

Horsepower and torque are really just two sides of the same coin, so you can't really say that you gain one and lose the other.

A larger diameter primary will make peak torque at a higher RPM than a smaller diamerter. A longer primary tube will also make peak torque at a higher RPM than a shorter one, but the effect isn't as pronounced as the effect of the diameter. Collector diameter and length also plays a part.

In the real world though, there are fitment concerns to worry about, so compromises are made, like the varying lengths of the primary tubes. If you're not designing your own headers, you just have to choose from what's available on the market.

Re: how restrictive??

There are a lot of disadvantages to long tubes, like reduced ground clearance, and the annoyance of custom fitting a complete exhaust system around the frame of a car that was never intended to have long tubes installed in it. They're also probably unnecessary if you're going to be keeping the TPI. I'd just get a good set of shorties with a good Y pipe and call it a day.

My 84 is my race car that sees limited street use, and it has long tubes. My 88 is just a cruiser and it still has the stock manifolds, but if I ever put headers on it, they'll just be shorties.

Re: how restrictive??

Maybe even more than that, depending on what the rest of your exhaust system is like.
