Well, as some of you know, I am a pizza delivery driver. I am also running a 383 with straight pipes. This all adds up to the conclusion I am in the wrong line of work, and the cops seem to think so to.
All I can figure is that people keep calling the sheriff because Im supposedly speeding through their neighborhoods, which is CRAP, my car is just louder than what is reasonable.
First ticket: February 14th, 1am, just taking it for a test drive after installing my new tach, pulled over for a supposedly illegal u-turn.
Second ticket: February 15, fifteen over the posted speed limit. Ok, I deserved that one.
Third thicket: February 18, defective exhaust. Exact words from the cop, "I didnt get a chance to hit you with the radar, but it sounded like you were hauling ***"
Now, not to bitch, but this is in the middle of a terrible week any way. I had just broke up with a semi serious girl friend. An old friend of mine had gotten himself kicked out of his house, and decided to move in with my family. (We seem to just keep taking in these stray teenagers)
To top it ALL off. Sunday myself and my father and I just about came to blows over something stupid. Monday I had to find somewhere else to spend a few days because I couldnt handle my house.
I was then informed I lost my job over calls from neighbors, supposedly I was doing burnouts upon leaving. Again, crap.
On the up side, scored some pretty parts
They are used and not perfect, but they were only $20

Now as far as fixing the problem, I am obviously going to put a rather extreme muffler in. I dont want it quiet necessarily, but quieter. The problem is that I dont want to take it to a pro, these guys want to do things their way, and it always makes me mad because that isnt how I want it. In order to get it how I want, I will have to do it myself. My only road block? I cant weld!
My cat back doesn't have the last turn after the rear axle that would go to a muffler. This is what my shopping list looks like, and my plan is to make the right turn from the tail pipe into a manderal bent pipe using an exhaust pipe connector. From there I go to a 34 x 7 magnaflow muffler, slap a tip on there, and then I should be cooking with gas, right?

This is alot of money for me to spend, but its less than an exhaust shop would charge, and I think this is doing it right the first time....
or I can just put in one of these:

Oh my god. I've never seen that website before. I want some energy drink/octane booster.
For the first ticket, prove that there was nothing where you u-turned that made it illegal.
For the second ticket, take it like a man.
For the third ticket, it should be a "fix it ticket" and since he didn't put anything down other than "defective exhaust" you should be able to fight it pretty easy.

Put a muffler on your car. If you drove through my neighborhood w/ straight pipes I'd be pretty pissed off too. I like old muscle cars but you can have power w/o unnecessary noise.

My buddy has the same thing happen on his own road. All his neighbors think he is going really fast, because he has a cummins diesel with a straight pipe, and 6spd manual. Redline in those trucks is only 3k RPM, and idle is 1k. So, you are constantly shifting, and you cruise at what sounds like a real high RPM.
It is funny, because his neighbors call the cops everyday, but whenever the cops are sitting in the trees, they never get him speeding because he really isnt doing more than 30.

Sorry but any reasonable person should have the expectation that running straight pipe on the street is gonna get you in trouble. I have mufflers on my car and I wont even drive it to anywhere other than the track and shows unless I am forced to.

I have a 383 with a 3 inch cat back, and it does make it share of noise. But if your in town or in a residential area you have to know to back it off and have respect for the people in the area. Unless they **** you off, then the gloves should come off

Well, my final solution was a supertrapp, easy for me to install, and i'll post sound clips next week.
Re: Three tickets, over a span of four days, that adds up to a bad week.
i do onsite IT support, and get alot of nasty looking when im crawling along looking for house numbers, got pulled over for "exessive exhaust volume" on my way to an emergency call [i have to respond with in an hour, and i was passed out for the first 30 minutes... whoops] driving through some narrow *** streets lined with building a cop pulled me over citing my exhaust was excesssive, didnt believe it was stock....
but then again my area is full of I4's with 6" exhaust that sound like *** and are obscenly loud.
but ya the first and third tickets are most definatly fightable, the 2nd one, well... it sucks but unless you can prove you speedo was out of wack or so some thing then you pretty much gotta man up and take it.

Live and learn
Joking aside, you're taking it like a man--so good job! Watch that t5...It might explode behind that 383.

Re: Three tickets, over a span of four days, that adds up to a bad week.
I was delivering pizza down a dead end residential street in the country about a year ago now, and I presume the unposted limit was around 25 or so. Could have been 35, I dont really know for sure. I was going around 35-40. I had to go slow enough to read the mail box numbers you know.
So I'm just going about my business looking at mailboxes, I slow down and drive around this woman with a stroller (she was about 30 feet down from the target driveway at the time of my entrance) and decided to go ahead and cut around her to get in the driveway. I was going slow, and my horrendously loud Flowmaster 80 (
) announced my presence, hit my blinker and watched her to make sure she stayed well out of hte way just in case she decided to start sprinting with her baby to try to suicide herself on my bumper cover. I figured that was the end of it. No drama, just delivered the pie, and then got to driving back out the way I came.
All of a sudden theres some old dude waving at me, so I just stop and see what he wants. This douchebag jumps out in front of my car, comes around to my window, looks at my nametag, points his finger at me and says "Kyle, this is a residential neighborhood. We have dogs. We have children. SLOW. DOWN."
I reply I think somewhat too honestly and say "I was only doing about 40..."
So this guy retorts "I DONT CARE HOW FAST YOU WERE GOING."
I says "Okay, bye", and I rushed off. No squealing tires or anything, but remember, as I pull off they get an earful of my flowmasters anyway... Added a bit of an exclamation point to it I think.
Either way, I left the confrontation before he could finish. I dont know this man, I dont need to be lectured, and I dont know what his intentions are. As far as I know this guy could be trying to steal my car, mug me, pr shoot me. You never know. I LEFT the confrontation, and as far as I'm concerned, that was the best way to handle it.
I dont think 40 in a long wide open stretch of road is THAT bad.... I've seen far worse. But I guess the moral of the story is that at the end of day Im some punk kid (I'm 22, but whatever) in a loud, red Camaro. That's enough to get everyone against you, and the police will believe everyone else's stories. Wouldn't you believe them if you were in their position? I would.
I've still never gotten a ticket in that car. But you've just got to be careful what you do in one of these, ESPECIALLY if it's loud. I'd suggest getting some real mufflers for it.

Re: Three tickets, over a span of four days, that adds up to a bad week.
I have a 2.5" in/out muffler i bought for my project camaro. If you really need one, gimme $10 plus shipping, and its yours!.
Honestly though, straight pipes at 1am!!!! ARE NOT COOL!!! Im a very light sleeper, and theres a douchebag in a blue pick up truck. If i ever get his plates, im definately calling the cops. I dont know what hes doing, but the speed limit here is 25 (40km/h). Its definately 100% children, and old person inhabited neighbourhood, where everyone works the next morning. This guy doesnt have a straight exhaust, but its atleast a flowmaster 40 maybe an 80 type deal.
My street, is on an interior cresent, that is on an interior street, in this secluded area. He has absolutely no business being there at 1 or 2 am. But for some reason, he "putts" by my front door (20km/h limit), turns onto the main street, and lights em up at full tilt. Thats just not cool.
I felt bad when i started the firebird past 10pm, to go fill up on gas (its cheap at night) with my stock exhaust. Because my neighbour, came down out of bed in her robe, to give me a talk to. She thought i was idling the car or tuning it or something.
Anyway, i realize you kinda HAD to do it, cuz ur delivering pizzas, but if you REALLY need money that bad, and you HAVE to work, AND you have a 383 that you built up, you got ur priorities mixed up. Just my 0.02

You should buy a $1000 CRX or something if you want to continue delivering pizzas... very good on gas and it will last a while... it will pay for itself very quickly.

I wouldn't say that most pizza delivery people don't make good money. I used to have an employee that worked for me, that quite a $15 per hour job to deliver pizza's and sub's. About 3 months ago he purchased a new $35,000 SUV. I asked him how he could afford that. He told me on a good night, He makes almost $250 on tips alone. Average night is around $100 a night. That is not bad considering it is all tax free. It almost makes me want to quite my job and become a delivery driver too
Re: Three tickets, over a span of four days, that adds up to a bad week.
thats about 1/4 of the reason i chose my job, i get paid to drive my car, and of course fix computers. pays pretty good... especially when im working @ 3x normal pay for the last 24 hours straight.... ugh

I think he's got his priorities right...I wish I had a 383 in my Camaro now even as I'm approaching 30. Do it now b4 your gf hits you with the "i'm pregnant" speech cause it will be along time b4 you get it from that point. If you think it would be awesome to have straight pipes then do it, cause you need to know if it is really worth doing it. I have an Edelbrock cat-back on my car with RPM series muffler. Its has a nice mellow tone at idle and get progressively louder especially a wot. I drove the car for a couple years without ever getting ticketed for it, but in a red Camaro with exhaust if you step one toe out of line you're gonna get nailed. A mellow toned muffler is the way to go if you want Johnny Q Law to back off. Driving style has an effect also I believe. Quick, but legal lane changes and take-offs from red lights make the cops power trip kick into high gear.

LOL man...i love itCops showed up at my door and talked to my parents because i was driving to fast in a school zone and my exhaust sounded like i was haulin *** because i kept poppin it into nuteral and revvin at 4 way stops (Stock pipes chopped off muffler = sick LOL....surprised at how nice it acctually sounds, like a friggin fire breathing dragon)...and someone decided to write down my plate

Probably some concerned soccer mom.
But yeah the reality is running over a child would ruin your life (and the child's life)...just be careful dude...

Yeah you shouldnt be delivering pizza's in that beast lol get a 500 dollar POS for that! Depends on where you live, in the city of buffalo you could get away with straight pipes but not in the suburbs. Just about every 5 seconds someone drives by with a giant hole in there muffler or gutted cat
