Which header to choose?
I'm looking to change my exhaust in the coming weeks and I have two different choices to choose from:I'm installing the headers on a 90 Firebird Formula 5.7L. I would like to know if there are any installation issues with either or any other advice. If you prefer one over the other or if you have gone with one over the other let me know. Thanks

Re: Which header to choose?
Most people go with shorties because of ground clearance.Just something to consider, you don't want to messup your new headers on the first speed bump you come across.

I have hedman long tubes. If your gonna shells out some money might as well do it once and buy the coated ones because the painted ones will just rust on you. These are what I have on my car.

Re: Which header to choose?
I had a clearance problem on both sides of the car where the headers hit the frame. It wasnt a big deal just heated the frame a bit dented it where I need them to clear and its was all said and done. Clearance issues are hit and miss with all are cars. What happened to me may not happen to you.

Re: Which header to choose?
I would suggest these for you:
Dynomax 86001
Reason:
- Better collector design for more power. The choked collectors make less
power (HED-68460).
- Coated will last much longer and look better. Painted will flake and rust
within a couple of weeks.
You might also want to try Hooker Competition. They dyno well, and are
reasonable price.

In that case,I'd agree with lukn4tbrl check out the hookers competition, good flow ,reasonable price, good fit,and in their price range one of the best in my opinion.

The dynomax headers in the original post only have 1.5 inch primaries.
I like the Hedmans personally, but that's just me. And for how much they cost, you can afford to replace them when tehy rust out in 5-10 years, since replacing them costs less than a coated set.

^^agreed....plus its not like headman's are horrible or anything like that, just a matter of personal choice and how much money you're willing to spend

Re: Which header to choose?
My mistake on the type error; I was looking at port size/spacing and bolt patterns.
I do however strongly suggest something coated. Even the headers that
84Z28 is suggesting are better. They have thicker flanges which will reduce the chance of warping and an exhaust leak at the port.
At least try to find something with a smooth, tapered collector. It will make
more power.
Good luck in your search.

Re: Which header to choose?
My opinion would be to buy a set of dyno dons 1 3/4 shorties with a y-pipe. These fit perfect and come coated. Why hassle with denting in your car for long tubes, and possibly having to move components around to facilitate your new headers. The 1 3/4 with 2.5 collector is enough header for the average build, and they cost 600 coated with the y-pipe from dyno don. Look him up, these have absolutely no clearance probs!
Just my
If you look at my sig, I am only going with 1 3/4 shorties and making 470 horse

Re: Which header to choose?
There is no need for a 1-3/4 header unless your making the car for the track and want it to flow a ton. 1-5/8 header is plenty for a street car and will keep the power band down low where it needs to be for the street.

Re: Which header to choose?
I have a 1992 formula with a TPI 350, current free flow exhaust into a Cherrybomb Vortex muffler. I want to add headers but do not know which 1's to get. I cant have longtube, clearance issues, I'd rather have shorty headers. Which brand should I choose? Stuck on this subject, need HELP...Rattlesnake92

Re: Which header to choose?
Hooker 2055's are probably the best shorties you can get, along with dyno don's custom made headers.

Re: Which header to choose?
I heard alot of good things about hooker, the link that I was sent was for a 90'. Mine is a 92 TPI 350, will those fit? And if so, only thing I need is headers, my exhaust guy can fab the rest so he recomended I goto this site for questions. 1 more thing, in upgrading my ignition, my car is relatively stock except the exhaust. What upgrades would anyone recomend that would fit my car ignition wise and maybe Computer chip wise? Its an everyday driver with 186,550 miles.
