Re: Open Stock Muffler and Mod it

I can't understand him but I know what he's saying let me translate:
"I don't have money for a catback system so I had a guy cut open the muffler and take out everything that's inside for $200.

Do you think it will sound nice?

I don't think it's going to be loud because it's a stock L03 TBI trans am from 1991"

It will be loud and i think it will sound nice. however your not saving all that much.

... for $200 you could have an all new exhaust fabbed up for ya, then just buy a muffler for like $50 and wah-lah your set.

Give the guy a break. His English is better than most American's French. And some American's English.

Anyway, removing all of the baffles and such inside the muffler will make it loud, and probably will not be a very good sound quality, either.

i disagree, have you ever herd the car without a muffler(probably very similar to one with a gutted muffler.)?

Albiet our opinions of 'sound good' may be different but here is what it will most likely sound like.

Re: Open Stock Muffler and Mod it

You could buy a used cat back from someone or buy a Flowmaster muffler and have it welded up for $200.

Modifying a stock muffler is a complete waste of money.

For $200 your better off just buying a new muffler.

Re: Open Stock Muffler and Mod it

I have thought about opening the stock muffler, and gutting it. But the way I see it, if you really want to be cheap, you could have some tailpipes and a y-pipe custom bent for less than $200, and that would just clamp right up to the I-pipe.

Re: Open Stock Muffler and Mod it

Well, you can spend the 200 on a "gutted muffler" or just have it ran straight pipe out the back, i think this cost me 50$. Couldnt be happier and it sounds better than any cat back to me, but hey, thats just me. Keep in mind this is well over 400 HP so your 305 will be about half as loud.

That is absolutely not true. See my thread about changing out the 80 series.

Unless, of course, your definition of performance is the ability to make noise (like an infant only gets results by making noise).

It's much more real-world to say

$'s = performance.

I see what your saying. Sometimes it is cheap to make noise. What i meant is that usually when there is high performance there is a lot of noise 'naturally'.

Albeit if your goal is low cost then it is still possible to make noise.

It is more common to make more noise when your high performance.

to be honest I meant this more of a joke than anything

$$$=Performance=noise --or--
NO$=NO performance=noise.

is this fair?

Re: Open Stock Muffler and Mod it

Well, lots of power means lots of air and fuel, so at higher RPMs where even more A/F is ingested into a race/performance engine you will have to expell the gasses, so usually a bigger cam and other components will allways make more exhaust noise.

Re: Open Stock Muffler and Mod it

I think that that [in the eyes of the general public that drive toyota corollas and dodge caravans]

more noise (at least on a v8) = more ***** under hood

I wanna play....

In my opinion, actually it's a fact....

sound=flow

a precise amount of flow= increased performance

Re: Open Stock Muffler and Mod it

oh ok, just a guess based on Five7's remarks, but if this guy is FRENCH, living in FRANCE, then I think the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together.
WE can buy a muffler for $30-$150 easily, and have it on in 2hrs if we stop to get blitzed halfway through. However thrush, flowmaster, walker, dynomax etc etc etc etc aren't stocked over there I imagine, and shipping to get it there would easily triple-quadruple the price (think of the size of a muffler eh?)
So yea, he got ripped off if he paid $200 for that, but he didn't have much other options....
Personally I would have spend the $200 or so on a new muffler and install. Can probably get a basic dynomax turbo muffler for that price.

But i have a exhaust leak.

200$ isnt much, when you make it by the shop. thats normal in switzerland thoes prices. for example a new cat back coasts with installation 1250$.

thanks guys. i think i buy a magnaflow muffler, i hope its loud because yea its the stock l03 exhaust, i think the small pipes will make the car silent, will see...
