Questions about magnaflow catback

Alright, I've been searching around about this exhaust because I want a new cat back, but I am not sure if it will satisfy me, I need someone who has heard or has this exhaust to answer some questions for me. I feel like the youtube videos don't give accurate volume levels for me.

I want a stainless steel catback with a new sound to replace my 100 dollar Walker OEM replacement catback. I want stainless because I live on long island and my 1 year old pipe is already starting to rust, nothing lasts here.

Now, everyone says that the magnaflow exhaust is quieter than stock, but every time I listen to a clip on youtube, it sounds louder than what I already have. I thought about flowmaster, but that isnt stainless and from what I am told they don't flow well at all. Magnaflow seems like the best bang for the buck...

But does anyone have this exhaust? I like the tone, but I still want to hear it. Is it really THAT quiet? As quiet as my OEM replacement exhaust? if I take off my cat would that make the exhaust any louder? I don't want an extremely loud exhaust, but I want a little bit more volume than I already hear. I always loved driving my dad's 928 because I loved hearing the sound of the V8 purring to me when I got on it, and still being able to hear that low growl inside the car.... but no drone

Does anyone have any advice for me? could the walker exhaust be even quieter than what my thirdgen had on it to begin with? I would really like some advice on this before I order my cat-back tomorrow.

Thanks for all the answers in advance.

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

Sounds like this exhaust isnt for me... yet there are not many stainless steel alternatives... none is this price range. Maybe I should buy the magnaflow catback then get a flowmaster muffler. Maybe that would work.

Keeping on topic, can any of you give me some more opinions?

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

so you want it loud all the time? a flowmaster 40 series sounds nice but not stainless.... maybe a stainless dynomax ultraflo center in/out should be loud

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

i have magnaflow and ill tell you what happened when i got it installed, i started it up and heard nothing LOL and i look at the guy and say wtf? (to the installer) and he's like yea its not so loud at first but as you drive it more and more it the sound will get "nastier" as in more tone. keep in mind i had a 305 (currently swapping to 350 and hooker headers) and stock header and y so yea of course its not gonna be stout yet. but after hundreds of miles as my daily driver yes the tone even at idle sounded a hella better actually hear it idle and i liked it, now im almost done with the 350 and 2055's so ill tell yea that thing will sound like a freakin beast im sure. i had heard a chevy pickup cruising down the 15 next to me and it had a bad *** tone to it and im dieing to know what he's packin so i roll my window down and cruise up to him and see a magnflow sticker on his rear window and im like wow i hope mine sounds like this or better when im done, overall i think its a good exhaust and as you make power im sure it will unleash more tone overall.

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

maybe... i dont know what it is man I just feel like the magnaflow sounds wimpy, and thats not even the case with a lot of em. I just wish there was a stainless steel, happy medium between the stock volume and the cliche flowmaster sound... something in between those would be awesome, but once again we're limited to our stainless options.... magnaflow borla and GMMG... the two latter being really expensive

Ok I have had my magnaflow exhaust for a month and Im really happy with it. Most people believed the stock exhaust I had wasnt stock cause it was too loud(for stock), but it was. Now what I wanted was more performance and something a little louder than stock and thats what I got. Its a tad bit louder than stock but its a lot more throaty, and the WOT sounds great. My car is a 305 TPI with the stock exhaust manifolds and y-pipe and in the future Im going to swap in a 350 with shorty's. So it should get even louder after that. Really for what your asking for the magnaflow sounds like the way to go.

Its good, nice and throaty, so you would notice a difference. Plus like you said you could always get the stainless cat back and then buy a different muffler if you dont like the sound.

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

Dont forget about the Loudmouth... Those are stainless.

Its sounding like you might need to build something custom. How about a loudmouth set up with a Magnaflow bullet? Or do the "dynomouth" set up. I believe thats a loudmouth with a dynomax bullet? Something like that.

I have magnaflow on my car, and I also have a cut out. When I want to be noisy but not obnoxious, I crack the cut out alittle. When I watn to be LOUD I open that sucker all the way. But for normal cruising, with the cut out closed, Im happy with the Magnaflow. Its really enjoyable in the car if you have to make a call or if you are talking. But when you go WOT it sounds like the gates of hell opening up. I love it. Plus I love the tips.

Of course thats through a head/cam LS1...so Im not sure what results would be on a older SBC. Never really heard one in person...but I imagine ti would be deeper and sound even better than my raspy powerplant.

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

So i started my search for a nice catback system around 3 months ago. after much youtubing and asking questions (and 450 dollars later) i ended up with the magnaflow 3' catback. installed it, had some problems but that was because the exaust that was on my car was the stock exhaust off of something else. and the system came with a flange with 2 bolts, of course my cat had 4. so i had to work around that, but overall it went smoothly. started it up and im not gonna lie i was a little disapointed. at idle, it had a pretty nice little rumble to it. but the keyword there is LITTLE. for lack of a better word, it was quiet. its been about a month now and ive grown to love it. its starting to break in more and every time i drive it i notice a difference. in my opinion, it sounds great. im pretty happy with it. i would recommend it. its exactly what i wanted, good tone, nice idle, and when you stomp on it it sounds great. and its not screaming loud either, which is also what i wanted because im a highschool student driving a 84 Z28, red as can be (and also in a small town) its quite the target car for police. yeah, ive been followed a couple miles and been pulled over. but they never once gave me a fixit ticket for loud exaust. sorry bout the life story.

i have the magnaflow and I love it. I get compliments all the time on it. Outside of the car it is pretty loud but inside it is quiet no blowmaster drone.

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

So does this cat back get louder with headers and just more power overall? would removing the cat make it louder?

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

pretty much what everyone said is exactly what i stated earlier so its not just me, they do get better over time due to the packing thats inside the muffler. now, i have heard that when you first get it you can torch the inside of the muff with a flammable as this will hollow it out more and i guess make it sound different, but like i said i remember seeing it somewhere might wanna try a search. but overall i love it and wouldnt go with anything else except maybe a borla i dunno. OHHH also forgot to mention, i LOVE that incredible grumble when you down shift so if you have a manual its even more fun!!

In general, installing shortys wont do a ton for sound... Installing long tubes will give you some more sound. And removing cats will give you A LOT more sound. However removing cats will also give you a raspier sound. Its more of an issue on LS1 cars though.

I wouldnt go torching the inside of a muffler using anything flammable. But thats just me.

If I could re-do my car's exhaust, or if I was starting off with a stock thirdgen, Ide really want to do long tubes, random tech cats, back to a 3" magnaflow catback. Maybe still with a cut out for times when you want more noise. But that would sound pretty sweet.

Re: Questions about magnaflow catback

oh yeah I have 1 3/4" shorties and no cat. I wouldn't even consider this set up with a cat the cat would make it too quiet. The idle could be a little louder but its plenty loud when I get on it without being too much of a cop magnet. I like it fine. If you want to be loud get some long tubes and 3" cherry bombs
