I think the hooker 2055s are the only 50 state smog legal?

EDIT: I bet the edelbrock tes are aswell. IDK for sure, better get a Mod in here from california, they know their stuff!

Re: Headers

Yes, you need 50-state, California legal headers with a CARB EO#. They will include the air tubes. Hooker 2055's would probably be your best bet for a stock engine. Stay away from Edelbrocks.

Did you see my sticky post at the top of this forum, entitled "Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?" ??

Hey Kevin; I have never seen you offer help or advice that wasn't 100% researched and accurate. So when I spotted your header response it got me quite curious as to what is up with the Edelbrock headers. I know that some of their heads and a couple other parts are not worth the price. I did however find a great deal on a set of edelbrock headers #68712; which has the smaller collector for those of us who want to quiet things down and under 3" till it gets to the catylitic converter. If you'd feel more comfortable on Edelbrock comments in a private message that's fine by me. As usual; I appreciate hearing your thoughts- Nitro-Nicky

Re: Headers

Everyone who's purchased a set from Dyno Don just raves about his product. I havn't heard of anyone yet who's had to dimple/dent them in order to bolt em up. I think his are cheaper when purchased coated??? Nitro

Re: Headers

well im in the market for headers as well. But im never sure which to buy. Dont know the difference if SHORTY or LONG TUBE works on a 86 iroc with a 350 tpi. Im cuttin the cat out!! ya i dont live in Cali so im NOT worried. we dont have smog tests where i live. i know that headers are EXPENSIVE!! you can get cheap ones for about 150.00 thats what im lookn to spend. but then again. shorty or long tube with what size collectors? lowered my car 1 inch so i dont need nothing dragging. let me know if anyone has any ideas. thanks!!

Re: Headers

ok so i lied a bit. i wont cut my CAT out but i will be replacing it with a HIGH flow cat if the price is right. dont need to go to jail or get my car impounded for missing my cat. LOL

You can search this Exhaust board for my name and edelbrock headers, but I'll post the basics now:

1. They used to be 1 1/2" primaries and 1 5/8" primaries on both sides. They claimed that made more torque, but sometime in 2002 or so they switched them to all 1 5/8" tubes.
2. The passenger side tube goes over the top of the other three, severely limiting spark plug access.
3. The black paint they use flaked off immediately, leaving a sickly looking white ash color.
4. The y-pipe is D-shaped, smashed together to make the exit.
5. The primaries are also D-shaped and smashed together to make the collector exit.
6. The AIR tubes stick well into the port, possibly hindering flow.
7. The flange welds are on the inside, severly narrowing the port and hindering flow.

Dany, if you get 50-state legal headers, which you must because you're in California with us, they will come with the AIR tubes. Dyno Don's headers dont have a CARB number, but they look just like another set of headers. (wink wink nudge nudge). I havent had any problem passing tech with mine. The post I'm referring to is in the sticky posts (Important/Useful) at the top of the Exhaust forum. Also, our next car club meeting is coming up in April. See the SoCal board and come on up. We'll tell you all the good stuff you'll need.

86IROC, you might see cheap headers out there, but that's the quality you get: cheap. The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low prices is forgotten. But thank you for leaving the cat on your car.

Re: Headers

I have the edelbrock headers on my car so Kevin91Z is right about them plus they have exhaust leaks on the passenger side near the firewall but I'm still buying Dyno Don's headers if it wasn't someone stealing the t-tops off of my 86 Chevy Monte Carlo when I was at work and the new ones cost about $650.

hey man, i just got the hooker 2055s with y pipe and magnaflow cat. i currently have a flowmaster 80 muffler on but am waiting for my magnaflow cat back which is on back order. all my air stuff has been removed a few years ago so i just put caps on the tube openings. these headers sound great and flow good. no clearance issues anywhere. got them on last saturday. my car got alot more aggressive. they are shortys. they work good
