Tips 'n' Tricks

On installing Hedman LT Headers, got any people? Should be here tomorrow.
Heard i might need to take the starter motor off? The dip stick? Anything else? Will the stock starter motor work?

Also, any tips on true duals? From the headers straight back, did you guys try to tuck them under the car or just run them straight back? Ground clearance? I'm ganna use 2 1/2" pipe, good or bad or fine or what?
Thanks!

You will need to take the stater off and the dipstick. I also had to take a torch and heat up some areas and dent them with a hammer on the frame. You might as well get some new motor mounts while your at it so the motor sits higher and you have less clearanceing issues. You will also need some hedman S-bends to clear the tranmission crossmember. And you better figure out what mufflers you want and where your gonna put them cause clearance is an issue.

The car currently isn't street legal so right now its just a track car, we are building the exhaust custom ourselves, so currently no mufflers but i'll prolly put magnaflow 4 inch chamber mufflers near the rear end, i'd rather not buy any aftermarket S bends or anything, besides a x pipe or something. hmm, i didn't think about the motor mounts, i live on a dirt road and there is the occasional pot hole and bump (i usually miss them lol) so the more clearance the better.

Re: Tips 'n' Tricks

When put my dual 2.5" pipes in, after the transmission crossmember, I brought the driver side pipe over to the passenger side, and ran them both over the rear axle on the passenger side. It is worth it to take the time to modify the transmission crossmember for more clearance on the driver side.
The glasspacks are after the rear end, and they are the very ends of the pipes.
If you can find a picture of the underside of a camaro, I can draw out where I put my pipes.

Did the xcelerator fit under your stock hood?

I was thinking about doing it that way, the x pipe would be easier to install, how was the ground clearance the way you did it?

And ya it did, with plenty of room to spare

An x-pipe would be very easy to install, my driver side pipe crosses under the passenger side pipe, a little after the transmission crossmember, and they are on opposite sides the rest of the way, all the way out the back of the car.

The spot with the worst ground clearance is where the passenger side pipe goes under the transmission crossmember, since I wasn't able to clearance the crossmember there, because I have an automatic transmission. Ground clearance is still good, it has never scraped, I can still go over speed bumps fine. I never measured the ground clearance, but I'll try and take a cell phone pic today.

Well, it was a while before I was on flat/level concrete, but I was finally able to take a pic today of my ground clearance. About 4.25".

Edit: 10sec., just saw your updated sig. "-Selling a Posi unit and/or a good stall converter? Let me know-"There is a '84 z28 in a junkyard around here, originally had a 5.0 HO, and it should have 3.73's and a posi, but I'm sure they have no idea that's what it is though.

Hey thanks for the picture it really helps. That would be nice, i didn't know they made a posi unit in 84? or is it aftermarket?

Re: Tips 'n' Tricks

I read on another thread in here that any '84 z28 w/5.0 HO would have 3.73's and posi, so if that is correct, it should have that. I took the aluminum drums off that car to use until I get rear disc. You ever opened up your rear end? I didn't see that you already had 3.73's, so maybe there is a burned out posi in there too.

I can't believe how bad of ground clearance some people have when they put duals in, esp. the ones with a manual transmission, which would allow me at least 6" of ground clearance, at least with the exhaust.

Re: Tips 'n' Tricks

Hmmm, i might have a burnt up posi but idk, i'd have to pull the cover. i didn't know the 3.73's came with posi i'll try and look it up.
so did you run your duals straight back or how did you do it? here i'll post a drawing of the underside of a camaro, just a minute...

Re: Tips 'n' Tricks

Everything isn't in perfect proportions or in exact location, but you can at least see how it works. After the point where the DS pipe goes under the PS pipe, both of them are very close. When they go over the panhard bar mount brace, they rest on the brace, but you'd never know without looking at it. It doesn't sound like it is rattling or anything. I think for duals going over the rear axle, the bmr kit that relocates that brace should be used, or at least something like it, it looks like it would be very easy to make something like that, without paying <$200. I do plan to relocate my PHB mount brace.
