Re: what would it sound like
I had a break in my pipe before the muffler due to rust and it was pretty loud. There was still some flow through the muffler... I didn't think it sounded that bad, but I did have popping on deceleration. If you're going to drop the muffler, consider a resonator and also keep the cat converter.

Re: what would it sound like
We had an 8n for a while, not as loud as an old minneapolis moline 445 with no muffler! I cured my headers with an open 3" Y pipe. Very loud. Just get a good flowing muffler or whatever, but PLEASE do not run no muffler on the streets. I do got a 3" cut out, but thats for showing off at shows/friends use only.

Re: what would it sound like
I currently am running my car without a muffler, it's got the pipe going back from the cat all the way to the rear right before where the muffler should be.
I think my car sounds great, i think it sounds better than some flowmaster mufflers, in my opinion anyway.
If i'm at idle and rev it all the way up to like 3500 or 4000 rpm then as the revs are coming back down there is a bit of rumble, no loud backfiring or anything just a rumble, i think it sounds great like that though.
I hear resonators help reduce the popping
Hope this helps.
and it's not THAT loud either
it's definitely up there with the other loud cars, like some alarms beep and stuff if i cruise past but i never get pulled over or anything for it being too loud, people don't complain.
maybe it's because i'm in liberal california, dunno, good luck though

Re: what would it sound like
Its not "that" loud because most of these iron headed engines were short on compression.
Try a open header car with a decent amount of compression then see if you can live with it.
Try a Hooker Aerochamber cat-back. Sounds like the hounds of hell are going to eat your children. But is very civil and quiet when a person is cruising, no drone inside either as long as there aren't any exhaust leaks.

Re: what would it sound like
No offense, but it might sound good at idle, or in the car, but trust me when your driving down the street, it doesn't sound that good.....it sounds like a car with no muffler, NOT a car with a large cam and open headers/straight pipes.....there is a big difference. Build a good exhaust system and it will sound better....

Re: what would it sound like
I built mine myself.....a lot cheaper than a muffler shop....and I lot better than a muffler shop would do, at least around here....I built mine for under $200 in my driveway....it looks professionaly built, but by me! LOL.....I'll get pics for you tonight.
Mine is all mandrel bent, 2 1/2" up front into a single 3 1/2" out the back...no cats....if you have a welder and something to cut metal with, you can do it yourself....just takes time (3 days straight on mine)....but I'll get pics tonight and post them...

Re: what would it sound like
On my old 92 RS, 305/TBI I cut the exhaust where it turns into the crossflow muffler & had it run straight back to the rear bumper.
Still had a cat. Sounded decent & never got hassled by the cops nor failed inspection.
The cat makes for a good "muffler" & keeps you legal.
You can just make out where my exhaust exited, right by the right side stripe.....
