385 fast burn exhaust help!
I recently bought a 385 fast burn engine with the aluminum heads. The ports on the heads r D shaped. What kind of Headers would mount correctly with the D shape? Plus im looking for a good dual exhaust system to run out the back. What are your preferences on performance exhausts? has anyone used borla? Im looking at going 3" all the way out but im not sure if its worth the extra money to get a borla system.....also ive seen the electronic cut outs and im wondering what your preferences were on performance and overall noise on our model camaros.
Re: 385 fast burn exhaust help!
These are the only "D" Port Headers I have ever seen. As far as them fitting on a third gen you might want to give them a call to make sure.

I know Hedman makes LT's with D-ports.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-68469/
Those would be awesom for a dual system... but make sure you're ready for the ground clearance problems that come with duals. And those Hedmans aren't gonna work with T5's either if you want to switch at some point. They work with T56s though.

The lt1 heads r square but the gm performance vortec aluminum heads that come with the 385 fast burn are d port.

Re: 385 fast burn exhaust help!
I looked up those headers from summit. They look great but do u know if they r for angle plugs. and what kind of clearance problems should i be checking with long tube headers.... I mean i dont mind them sticking a little low but is there any kind of fabrication that i need to do to them?
Ierocdx3-
600$ is a little steep for what i am looking for.im tryin to get away with around 300 or less

Re: 385 fast burn exhaust help!
Well you'll need to fabricate an exhaust system.
Other than taht, depending on what headers you get you may have to clearance a few things. With my Hedmans I had to cut off a small chunk of the A-arm perch.

Re: 385 fast burn exhaust help!
I bought this same engine and installed it this spring with Heddman HD-66479. These are shortie, D-port, angle plug, nicely coated and specific to third gens. No issues with clearance around either my T-5 or the T-56 I have in now.
To install them: The pass side went straight in even with my A/C in the way. For the driver's side I had to remove the rod that attaches the steering column to the steering box. With that done though it was an easy fit and there was no necessity to notch the K-member for fittment.
The biggest problems you'd face with these are cost (600+) and that your goal is a true dual long tube setup while these are shortie headers. I scratched my head over this for a couple of days too and decided I wanted to get the car out of the garage and on the road and not waste any more time monkeying around. Since I had a heddman setup on my old 350 there was a reasonable chance that these would bolt up to my existing y-pipe (they did).
When I went for my dyno session the tech told me they had never managed to generate more than 500 hp out of an LT1 with a y-pipe and that my exhaust setup would cost me in terms of output. That being said, we did get 355hp at the rear wheels with my 650DP on top(the book recommends a 750CFM carb) which is right where I was hoping to be.
I hope that this doesn't seem like too much useless rambling. The point I wanted to make is that I used HD-66479 with no trouble and that the car is fun to drive even if I not getting every ounce of power that I could.
Later,
Jon

Re: 385 fast burn exhaust help!
Hello fellow 385 person
My sig has the part numbers for my car, for any alternatives you might consider. Gotta say I love this set-up. I originally wanted to go true duals but this set up SCREAMS when you open her up and I think it's more than enough. Had the shop make a y-pipe, said it wasn't too difficult to get it made.
I think the only difference between the 66 and the 68 was coatings if I remember right. If you want looks under the hood get the 66479, so far the 68479s are fine and quite a bit less.

Definately! That y-pipe is much better than mine hehe, the guy that made up mine looks like the stock y-pipe with a 90° mate up hehe!

I can vouch for Dyno Don's headers. They will not restrict the flow of your ports.

If your motor mounts and headers and all line up the way mine do, and hopefully they will... this is all you'll have to cut:

Re: 385 fast burn exhaust help!
Its done boys! I got the hedman 68469s and installed them this weekend. I had to cut that spot on the a frame peice. But then found out one of the runners was hitting the frame near the motor mount. So i ended up heating the frame and denting it down a bit. But after that it looks sweeeeeet
