ok well whenever i rev or hit the gas on my 87 iroc camaro it will make a horrible high pitch grinding sound that is very loud and does anyone know why its doing it? it also tends after about 2min of warm up it will make lower pitch grind at around 1k rpm for about 2secs. i just got the car fixed for 1500dollars after sitting for 5yrs with gas in the tank but it was running perfect at first then it started doing this. i belive this is a exhuast problem as i only hear this at rear of exhuast.

im thinking but might be wrong do im not a mechanic or even close to 1 but is it possible its just the exhuaust hangers and to loose? they wobble very much with little pressure.

also i will be getting a new exhuast for her and what do you guys suggest mostly for sound like i want a nice deep classic american big block rumble sound that is slightly louder then stock and not near the annoying level trying to keep it somewhat stock sounding i want it to sound like a 69 camaro though! how much will it cost? where should i buy? how long will it take to install and what tools are needed. thx everyone!

ok unrelated to cars somewhat, anyone know how to get a vid off a sidekick lx 09 and find it on a windows vista gateway laptop? because i have a exhuast clip of the sound that i mean but i cant find the vid and i know it uploaded the pics that were on my phone but im not sure about the video..?

 

The grinding noise could be anything. I dont see how it could be the exhaust though. You're going to have to do a little more detective work to give us more to work with.

Also, your motor is going to sound like your motor regardless of what exhaust you put on it. You cant make it sound like a big block. And a lot of 69 Camaros had SBC's just like you do. Should sound very similar unless you're speaking of the original (rare) 69 Z28 with that massive camshaft in it.

no no im not talking about makin the engine sound like a 69's i mean the exhuast you know how well atleast with mine it kinda has a wine almost like noise to the tpi's but the 69's camaros 70 chevelle's 69 nova's usally have that deep rumble alot like the exhuast that's what i want my exhuast to sound like.

 

Grinding noise. I would check your flywheel maybe it is busted and grinding. Or in front of the engine a bearing on a waterpump/ alternator gone out. Just inspect by seeing it if wobbling while its running or anything flying off the alternator like mine did. the rear bearing on mine was gone. and it was very noticeable. I would check a few places there.

 

ok thx i'll still get it checked beause i dont know a whole lot about cars i know most of the parts of a engine not of the top of my head but the rest kinda fly's right past me lol. thx for your help though i'll go look and see if something kinda look strange

 

actually sorry i listend to the exhuast again and it's more of a popping kinda like noise more like a chatter it sounds like metal and metal hitting each other.

 

Lay down near the passenger door and see if you can hear it louder there. I'd be willing to bet you've got some loose chunks of catalyst rattling around in the catalytic converter.

 

ok well i did what you suggest but i dont belive that's it because towards the front/middle all i here is the engine the exhuast isnt making the noise but i felt the muffler and it has a sronger thumping feel to it so do you think its the muffler?

 

It could be. There are usually some type of metal baffle(s) inside to deaden the exhaust sound and I suppose one could have come lose. Its a lot less common than the catalytic converter problem I suggested. What you could try is this:

With the engine off, lay behind the car and kick the muffler and see if you hear the same rattle. Try it with the catalytic converter as well.

It could also be the exhaust pipe anywhere in between. Where it goes over the rear axle is kinda tight, and it could be rattling on something there. Do you hear any kind of rattling/thumping/metallic sound when inside the car?

 

thx for all you help but ya its actually the muffler the mettal bafles came off. what muffler do you suggest? i want 1 that is maybe a little louder then stock but nothing extreme at all but a nice deep rumble.

 

I have magnaflow and sounds good. I hate floslappers. But eh. IMO

 

Your best bet would be to check out the stickies at the top of this forum. I know they used to have one with a bunch of different exhaust sound clips.

I know everyone hates them, but I like the sound of flowmasters. To me, an 80 series flowmaster is the "typical" Camaro/Firebird sound. They can get kinda loud though. I have what I believe is an 80 series on my Camaro now(it was a JY find so I'm not 100% sure) and its not too bad around town. Sounds nice and it can be quiet if you want. Only complaint I have is that it has the typical "droning" sound on the highway. If I took it on long highway trips more it would get really annoying, but I usually don't go more than 10-20 minutes on the highway.

I do like the chambered mufflers from GMMG and others too.

I never could get used to the sound of Magnaflows, the tone is just not deep enough.
