Headers and Exhaust setup with afr 195 heads??

Im trying to find an exhaust setup for my new afr 195 heads.
What would be good headers at reasonable price??? would it be better to go long tube or short tube??? If i go long tube is there a way to do a true duals if not is there anyway to make the exhaust not go under the trans crossmember. what size of exhaust would be best??

thanks any info would be helpful

Re: Headers and Exhaust setup with afr 195 heads??

I ran into this same issue when I had AFR 195's. SLP headers were a little small and I ended up going with dyno don headers. I do not know the size of the hooker L/T's exhaust ports.

My hooker 2055's fit great on mine. No complaints here.

Let Dyno Don know you have the AFR heads. His headers will work great with AFR heads. Most if not all headers are not wide enough for the AFR head exhaust ports.

TKR, what are you engine plans (HP levels)? A strong 350? Long tubes will have little ground clearance since you have to run exhaust below transmission cross member. Not enough room to run them above 700r cross member. Also, long tubes do not hair air equipment hookup. A good shorty design like Hooker 2055 or Dyno Don's will work great. You can run dual exhaust with shorties but easier to do single exhaust pipe to muffler and then have dual exits.

Re: Headers and Exhaust setup with afr 195 heads??

i am planning on being around 380 ish more or less horses thats about what i heard this setup im running will give me. where i live emissions is not required so the air hook up wont matter along with the smog pump and catalytic converter so emissions im not worried about. also i have heard a way that some ppl would cut the cross member and weld pieces of steel strap to have the pipes run straight instead of going under the cross member would that be a bad thing to do if the right size strap is used?

Re: Headers and Exhaust setup with afr 195 heads??

Also i looked at the hooker 2055 headers and noticed that they have a 1 5/8 primary when i asked a tech from JEGS about it and they said i would need headers that have 1 3/4 primary tubes so if that info is right the hooker 2055's wont work right.

Re: Headers and Exhaust setup with afr 195 heads??

I wonder why Jegs said hooker 2055 would not fit. Is it due to exhaust port size of AFR 195's? 1-5/8" primaries will still work good for your build. Dyno Don shorty headers have 1-7/8" primaries and will fit 195's. I've read that 700r is to big and doesn't leave enough room to allow exhaust pipes around it above cross member. I saw a member here that modified cross member so it tucked right under it. Another member just routed dual exhausts around transmission area near sides of car. Regardless I think lowest clearance point is where long tube headers end. Check out photos in this post.

"Dyno Don shorty headers have 1-7/8"

Actually they are 1 3/4" and will get the job done.

Re: Headers and Exhaust setup with afr 195 heads??

I have been looking on here after purchasing my AFR's for header advice. It looks like a lot of people are going with Dyno Don headers for the best fit application. However, I have a set of Edelbrock TES headers currently on the car which have a 1 5/8" primary tubes on them. The AFR state that they have a 1.6" exhaust valves. Seems like the port size would be dead on. Just trying not to spend the $ on another set of headers when I got the perfectly good set still on the car. Let me know. THanks

Double check the tube size on the Edelbrock, some came with 1.5" tube in the middle and 1.625" size on the end tubes...my old Edelbrock's came like this..there are a few threads on this matter.

I went with the SLP headers after selling the TES.

Dyno Don headers are a proven product...especially on this forum, they are well respected.

Best bang for the buck are the stainless long tube 1 3/4" headers on ebay with the y-pipe. They are under $300.

On a street car, steel or coated headers don't make much sense. Stainless headers will outlive the car, which is why SLP headers are still floating around.

On a track only car, steel headers are ok cuz the car isn't driven in the rain and the headers will probably get thrown out during the next rebuild cycle.
