you're all gonna laugh at this, but after making this video, neighbors were coming out of there houses cussing at us...

okay, we have a little dilema here. the 92 rs we are tearing apart right now has VERY loud exhaust. you can hear it a long ways away if you're getting on it. it sounds nice and all, but after hearing the stock exhaust on a '91 rs with very low mileage, we would rather go for the "new car nice" kind of exhaust rather than the "badass loud" exhaust.

i want to switch to a quiet exhaust without losing power... is that possible? i really want headers (that adds a lot of power on an lo3) but how do you keep the exhaust quiet without it being restrictive?

we've gotten too many complaints from neighbors and the loudness is only cool for so long...

 

Maybe cut out a length of pipe and put in the longest glasspack you can find? That'll quite it down quite a bit and it shouldn't create much more back pressure.

Is that car a 3.1 as well and what muffler does that car have? Wouldn't be too loud for me.

 

Lol there's an idea...lol. no one makes a quiet and efficient exhaust for Camaro's? lol.

it's a 305, aaron owns it but him and I are restoring it together with the help of some neighbors. my car is a v6.

 

Quiet & good flowing can be summed up in one word - Borla.

 

Absolutely not. The borlas I have heard have been actually on the loud side compared to others I have heard. Besides the adjustable borlas for our cars sound like wattery farts anyway. Atleast IMO.

If you can find a catback from a 99+ (98 cars had a different catback) SS that would be VERY quiet but one of the best performing catbacks available. They are called the SLP dual/dual on the forums and should be pretty easy to find.

I have a bassani catback on mine and with shorties and 3" cat it was VERY quiet. With my new exhaust setup it should be quite a bit louder but I am not expecting enough to **** off the neighbors.

Another one that I don't care to recommend but will anyway is the hooker catback. I like how it sounds on ls1s and to a much lesser extent, lt1s, but on our low compression, small cammed engines I don't much care for the sound. But on all the cars I have heard it on, its very quiet until you get on it. Then it starts getting a bit louder.

Lastly, a good budget option is to get a stock z28 or trans am catback from the 93+ cars. They have slightly larger piping I belive but are very quiet (obviously). Then if you want some more noise every now and then, just get a 3" cutout and maybe an electric opener for when the time is right. Best of both worlds.

 

thanks for all the reply's! yeah, well the current exhaust actually makes the hatch glass vibrate and it's very annoying.

 

I went from a flowmaster 80 (loud) to a dynomax catback with hooker 2055's and 3" catco cat and it's way quiet compared to before. I thought it would be louder, but its not. I'm not sure which dynomax muffler it is though. Whatever you do, keep a cat on the car to keep it quiet.

 

I went with the Edelbrock Catback. Three inch mandrel bent tubing, and it looks basically stock. (which was also a consideration) It flowed well, give a noticeable power increase (from stock..) And sounded really good. Not too loud, unless you get on it. I didn't turn my radio on for three years after installing it, as I loved the way my car sounded.

 

Here are some videos I've made of my Texas Speed & Performance Rumbler catback. It was originally designed for LS1s, but obviously it can be installed on a 3rd gen, with a few tweaks. Just not a 100% direct bolt-on.

Really quiet at cruise & part throttle, but opens up at WOT.

Are you talking about the adjustable or non-adjustable ones? I haven't heard the non-adjustable one but all of the adjustable ones have been kinda loud considering its still just a catback. But I attribute that to what plate is in the y section. They do have some of the best looking tips out of any catback offered though. I love those.

 

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned magnaflow. i've heard thier pretty quite and mellow untill you really put your foot in it. never heard one myself though.

I even have a Magnaflow cat on there too.

I have a Magnaflow in the Camaro as well. It flows great, but I wouldn't call it "quiet". Not as loud as an 80 series, but still a lot louder than stock.

You must have the older Edelbrock system, built before 2004. I have one I put on in 2004 and am sooo pissed at how loud it is with the "chambered" muffler that came with it. My inlaws had an Edelbrock system they put on their '87 Iroc (with factory manifolds) that is just barely louder that OEM. It had the old style Edelbrock muffler and I'm replacing mine muffler with a Borla XS piece next week.

 

I put the Flowmaster # 17151 with the 30 series muffler on mine. It has headers and no cat. The system is the quietest Flowmaster that I have ever heard(a lot quieter then the 80 series)and has a great tone. So it is possible to have a good flowing quiet exhaust.

Whats the current exhaust setup on this car? Shouldnt be too loud. I had open pipe on my L98 when it was stock and it really wasnt loud until you drove it around with some decent throttle

If you want quiet, dynomax ultraflo's. Magnaflow has similar

Borla is also fairly quiet but flow good.

ANY of the straight through fiberglass packed mufflers should be quiet.

Great system here too, friends SS with heads/cam/etc has that and its very mild but its a capable high 11 second car

 

stock manifolds > no cat > flowmaster 80 series catback.

 

Interesting I ran my flowmaster 80 back in 2003 and it wasnt all that loud but i had a cat, but also headers which helps sound

If its way to loud now, put a long bullet muffer behind where the cat used to be. cheap 40 dollar dynomax bullet about 18" long. It will tone it down some

OR right before the tips, put a 12" bullet on each end

 

throw on some Walker Quiet-flows out back then a pair of cutouts right before them.. when you want it loud just open up the cutouts.. lol


If you get into the actual math of an exhaust system i'm sure there is a way to get a quiet setup that still flows good enough for your engine. I worked on this for a while with my V6. I ended up with an X pipe with true duals and a pair of Hooker Aerochambers. It could be quieter but it's not terrible. Aerochambers don't drone like Flowmasters do so highway driving is much better.

 

just put a cat back in there, it'll quiet it down a bit and the system will sound depper with more of a rumble instead of that hollowy tin can loud that 305s sound like without a cat.

 

I am running a hooker Aerochamber muffler with hooker 2055's and 3" tubing. I love it, not as loud or as droning as the Flowmaster's get when on a cruise but just as loud when you get on it.
