Oh boy....Y-Pipe Issues

I installed my engine with a new oil pan that I thought worked really well. It was designed for stroker cranks and the crankshaft didn't rub anywhere and I figured that was a good thing...I mean not having to put a dent in the pan so my rear crank throw would have clearance. - but -

I now have my entire engine ready to fire up, and putting on my exhaust was the last thing left. Guess what? My Edelbrock TES Y-pipe won't fit. The one thing I didn't notice was that the oil pan I'm using was just slightly deeper than the last one I had, and now the Y-pipe won't reach to bolt up to my shortie header on the driver's side. I'm talking about the section of the Y pipe that goes under the oil pan. I need about another inch for it to bolt up. I got the passenger side to bolt up...

Is the only answer a custom Y pipe now? I don't kow if I can even rig anything up enough to get it to a shop. Heck, I still need to do the initial startup and set the timing etc...what a fix I'm in...

I wonder if Dyno Don's headers and Y-pipe will work? That's about the only setup I'd get rid of my current headers for..but of course, I don't want to spend that kind of cash just to find out they won't work either...Help!!!

Re: Oh boy....Y-Pipe Issues

i had the excat same issue i had a moroso 6qt oil pan and i some hooker shortie and hooker y pipe. and i def didnt even come close to fitting.... i fixed this by outting in a stock pan... but i know u wanna keep ur pan... so you got 2 options... long tubes... and no y pipe. or modify ur pan... it wouldnt be as had as u think... u will have to take ur pan off. u can do it with the motor in ur car. get about a foot of 3in exhaust tubing. cut ur pan on the botton to where it will clear ur y pipe then weld the pipe into the pan and cut the pipe off to where only the curve of the pipe is left welded into to the pan and that should provide the clearance u need to clear the y pipe. hope this helps

Re: Oh boy....Y-Pipe Issues

How about you cut the flanges off the y-pipe and add the necessary amount of pipe to clear the pan that is what I would do.

Re: Oh boy....Y-Pipe Issues

I though about doin that but i test fit my pipe below teh oil pan an it stuck proly 2 in down below my crossmember and def didn't want that being the lowest point on my car it would hot everytime u went over a speend bump or anything else and then plus if it did hit on anything it would now crush ur ypipe up into ur oil pan.

Maybe you can crush the pipe more into a oval that goes under the pan to help out for clearance. Then like the other guy said just add the extra pipe to make it connect to the header flange.

Re: Oh boy....Y-Pipe Issues

Thanks for the suggestions....

I managed to jury rig it up enough to get it to an exhaust shop by stacking two donut gaskets together on the driver's side flange....hopefully I'll get it there tomorrow. I'll have to see what they can do for me....besides empty my wallet. lol

I thought about jacking the entire engine up and changing the pan, but they don't sell a good Camaro-type oil pan that will clear a stroker crank at the same time.....I suppose I could modify my pan, or have a new pipe made...I think either would run about the same in money and perhaps less time (and hassle) for a modified pipe.

I'm tired of denting pans for clearance also just to have each one leak in the same spot. I also thought about "ovalling" the pipe as you mentioned Tony, but I'd still need more clearance so I'll wait to see what the exhaust shop can do first...

As I mentioned above...Dyno Don's shortie headers are one of the few I'd swap up for, but I'm afraid of Y-pipe issues with those too. These F-body specific oil pans suck...period.

Re: Oh boy....Y-Pipe Issues

I don't think changing to a diff y pipe is gonna fix ur clearance issue... And I don't know exactly how ur pan is designed.. But on mine I would have to lower the crossover pipe that runs between the pan and crossmember aboit 2-3 inches belowe the cross member making my y pipe hang well below the crossmember making it the lowest point under the car...

Actually, if the shop bends the pipe properly, there's still room to tuck the pipe between the pan and crossmember. Never really had any clearance issues since I keep my car at stock ride height.
