Re: borla exhaust

i dont really care for the cat back. everybody runs the open element for the loud so lets think bout this 700 dollar straight pipe. id save the money and just put one of their mufflers on not the whole kit.

but thats just my 2cents

Re: borla exhaust

I lucked into a slightly used catback setup for $50 and I love it.....granted it doesn't sound as good as it should because of my tbi and stock headers/y pipe, but it's stainless and sounds awesome.

Re: borla exhaust

I have them installed and love them. They will be loud at WOT but not so loud your ears start to ring. Under normal driving you can hold a conversation with your passengers. Next year when I redo my car the exhaust will stay in the car. I have a stock 305 I can't wait for the sound of that 383.

Re: borla exhaust

The reason the cat back costs so much is the quality of the pipe and muffler. It's made of 304 stainless steel and will last for a very long time.

Re: borla exhaust

If you're just gonna buy a muffler... compare the Borla XR1 to the dynatech split flow. It's what I run.

Borla XR1:

Dynatech Splitflow:

Very similar, and the dynatech is a little cheaper. Sounds like the devil being unleashed at WOT, but it is pretty loud, and I imagine the XR1 to be about the same.

Just another thing to consider; I have the BORLA with the electric cutout, you can go from mild to wild with a switch.

i replaced the 2.5 inch pipe that comes off the cat with a 3.0. it allows you to put the transverse flow muffler that is listed under the fourth gen camaro in borlas website, Borla 40477 Universal Transverse Flow Muffler

It's only a dummy if you have the closed plate added. Mine is open at idle some exhaust comes out the right side. As soon as I open the throttle the muffler builds back pressure then the excess comes out the right side. That's by design. That's why at idle it's a nice rumble at WOT it's loader.

Re: borla exhaust

I put the Borla cat back on my stock setup with a 305 TPI, and put in one of the mid sized cutout plates, I was overall pretty happy with it.

Now, I have the catback on a 383TPI with 1 3/4" primary headers to 3" all the way back and I have the electronic cutout...

Definately a bit louder the cutout makes a difference, and it is Awesome being able to change the tone at the driver seat with a switch rather than crawling under the car to change it to see what is liked better...

The only thing I didnt like on this cat-back kit is when I originally got it, I was disappointed the 3rd gen f-body kit came with the angle cut round tips, i really wanted the oval intercooled tips that came on a lot of the other Borla kits. When I orignally got the kit many years ago, Borla said I could mail back the round angle tips and for additional $$, they would replace the tips with which ever Borla tips I wanted. I never did this as I was tight on the loot, but I wish I did. Heck, never know, maybe they'll still change them over for me...

I do not regret getting the Borla kit at all, it's stainless, it's dynamic (with the split before the muffler), it sounds and looks great (in my opinion). What more does anyone want in a catback system??

Re: borla exhaust

Borla is expensive! But I agree, the electronic cutout must be handy.. when parking at home or driving late at night or just want a relaxing cruise, i'd put it on the lowest setting.. But when racing or wanting to drive around open it up. Where is the switch for the exhaust? I would think a cool place would be inside the front ashtray if you never use it. Also, does Borla sell their system with the electric cutout or is it a separate purchase?

Re: borla exhaust

hellz_wings, Borla to my knowledge does not sell the electric cutouts, I got mine through QTP:

http://shop.quicktimeperformance.com...ct_detail&p=29

I also just saw they have a wireless control for these now...

I am doing just what you mentioned, I am modifying my ash tray to fit the switch. I got a clean ash tray from a yard and started cutting it up to put a switch plate in it, kind of recessed so I would be able to still shut the lid.

It is not cheap when you look at the exhaust system and cutout compared to other systems... The system is stainless, so it should outlast my car, and it does provide the unique dynamics with the cutout, plus I just always loved the sounds of other Borla systems. That was enough for me, sure isn't the only thing on my car I've over indulged on...

This system looks awesome! Where is the cutout located? I'm assuming before the cat?

Re: borla exhaust

cutout is after the cat, it is a cat-back system

You basically have the 3" from the cat and it Y's just BEFORE the muffler on the driverside of the car after the read axle. One side of the Y has a 3-bolt flange where Borla provides adapter plates with different opening sizes (or you can put the electric cutout in), this side goes straight out the passenger side exhaust tips (no muffler). the other branch of the Y crosses over to the driver side going through the Borla muffler which maintains just about 3" right through and then exits the driver side tips.

This should make more sense if you check out the photos on Borla's web site.
