Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
I was going through reading old post and came across this one
I only have a spacer on the drivers side.
Seems like you would need one for each side.
I had an exhaust leak on my pass side because
the flange broke on my ypipe.
So i want to make sure if there is something needed
between the y pipe and the manifolds
Any one who could clarify whether or not it is need
on both side would big a big help
Thanks, Chrome on Rust

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
Ok so i think spacer is the wrong word of choice.
I think it is an exhaust flange gasket.
I found these at Auto Zones web site:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...fier=79016_0_0_
(they also had 2.5 in. but i dont think thats stock?)
Would this be what i would need between my
stock manifolds and stock ypipe?
And i still need to know if they would be need on both sides.
Because like i stated before that the guy said only the pass side
need one, but i only have one on the drivers side.
( I know you whom is reading this is a smart guy,
and looking the help an exhaust noob. I can feal it)
Thanks CoR

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
You shouldn't need anything between the stock y and driver's side manifold. There is a spacer for the pass side that took the place of the EFE valve on the earlier carbed motors.

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
On carbed cars there was an EFE valve between the pass side manifold and pipe. On later non-carbed cars, a simple spacer replaced the EFE valve. There's nothing on the driver's side.

1.is this spacers something that could fall off after time?
or is it pressed or welded on?
2. so i dont need the flange gaskets?
Sorry for the noob questions, my car has been apart for
about a year and a half so i cant remember, and thanks for the answers!

Chrome on Rust, if you can post pictures it might help resolve your question. Apologies for hijacking the thread. JamesC and naf, do you have a part number or know where to locate the spacer that replaced the EFE? I've tried GMParts Direct, local parts stores and junkyards without success.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
Reportedly NAPA had a replacement for the spacer. I did a search though where I thought the info might be and didn't find anything.
The spacer (and valve) were cast iron. You'll note that the pass y and manifold are both female where they meet. The spacer provided the male-male connection and was held in place with the bolts that attached the y to the manifold.
I'm in Wisconsin or could get you a photo. Try the parts wanted section. Someone may have one left over from a header install. Or try thirdgen ranch or hawks?

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
Ok well i went to go take it out, and i have the Y pipe off.
The spacer on his car has some kind of exhaust diverter in it. is that the one i need? the diverter can be moved back and forth allowing it to be open or semi shut.
And if it is the right one any good way of getting it out?
Thanks for the replies all. big help

That sounds like the EFE valve, not the TPI spacer. Not what you want.

Thanks James! always nice getting quick replys.
The whole time he had the car (3-4 months) he thought it was tpi
Makes me wounder if its a 350 and not a 305 is there an easy visual tell between the two? like vin# or something.

You can use the EFE if you want. Just take out the butterfly valve and plug the holes for the shaft or leave the shaft in place.

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
When I was replacing my manifolds a while back I came across this spacer. It was the cause of the exhaust leak and not the manifold as I had thought. With the AC in the way it was impossible to tell for sure.
When it came to hooking the exhaust up to the new manifold I didn't put the sspacer back and used the metal gaskets. Sealed up great with no leaks. I still have the spacer in the garage if you absolutely have to have one.

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
Humm, anyone else done what megtom2 said about replacing the spacer with a metal gasket?
That would not put you to close to the oil pan or any thing?
Im guessing you mean one of these http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...fier=79016_0_0
So what do you guys think the better idea would be to use the EFE or to go with a metal gasket? I only want to have to mess with this once and i want it to love me long time. I had the same issue with my old spacer leaking, so need less to say it got chucked. This is one of the last thing from a long list that is holding me up. Also i just another job, was laid off for awhile, and this is my DD.
Thanks again all for the replys

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
Yep that is what came with the replacement manifolds I bought. I tried using the spacer but it was obvious it would fail once again just from the way it sat on the manifold. I did end up ripping out the AC which made everything much easier to get to and I didn't even have to jack the car up. I did jack the y-pipe up which was easy since the weld between the two pipes(in the y pipe) had come apart so if I moved the pass side up an extra couple of inches it didn't raise the driver's side.
On another note stay away from buying the magnaflow dual cat with y-pipe shown here http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...1&apwidu19RH8Q
It is NOT a direct fit and will not clear the oil pan to the driver's side manifold. I am still pissed about that realization after chucking up the dough to buy them.

Re: Spacers need between Ypipe and manifold?
I'd use the spacer. It's going to be thicker than the gasket, maybe 3/4"? and will better keep the correct geometry between the y/manifolds/cat. There should be no reason it doesn't seal as long as the correct bolts are used, torqued with lock washers.
