Catalytic converter no longer needed?
I'm not sure how it is in other states but, on my dmv site for NY, the age limit for cars required to have a cat is 25 years old and older. My car has just turned 25 this year. Is anyone else familiar with this type of rule?

Re: Catalytic converter no longer needed?
The rule only applies to emissions testing. By Federal Law, it still has to be there, just doesn't require to be tested for cleaning the exhaust anymore.

So one can beat out a portion of the internal ceramic honey-comb,
and then install it?
and then install it?

Can you? Yes.
Is it a Federal violation of tampering? Yes.
Is the fine for tampering worth risking it? Your wallet, you choose.
And not very flow efficient due to the sudden open area in a gutted cat, then squeezing back into the pipe to get out of the cat.

Some vehicles are exempt from the emissions inspection program. Your passenger car or light truck does not have to be inspected for emissions if it is:- Less than two model years old;
- 26 model years old or older;
- Registered with historical plates; or,
- Electric-powered only.

Re: Catalytic converter no longer needed?
again, just because it is now exempt from testing, does NOT mean you can remove the emissions equipment.
If the car has a cat from the factory, the is no legal way to eliminate it, nor is there any real performance advantage. If you want something "better" you can swap in a emissions legal high flow version.
Besides, without a cat, the car will stink.

Visual verifies it is there.
Emissions Test verifies that it works.
Just put a "High Performance" cat on there (hi-flow).

Damn, I was getting kind of excited. We have muscle cars, we should not be subjected to this type of imprisonment. I know this sounds childish, but are the feds really going to check underneath my car for the cat?

Will you REALLY miss that 2 horsepower loss, from a good cat being there?

It's not so much the hp gain, nor the exhaust note. It's sticking it to the government for trying to control every aspect of my life. (I know it sounds hippieish) Muscle cars are like symbols of rebellion.

100 bucks says you'll get tried of the exhaust sound within a couple of weeks.

Re: Catalytic converter no longer needed?
I like the way my exhaust sounds even with it. My exhaust makes the car sound like it has a big block. I just want less back pressure. If it must remain on the car, then i have no choice. Lol 86TA I'll be sure to do a burnout where the original woodstock took place to honor my hippie ancestors
