305 Exhaust Upgrade?

Bone stock 305 TBI/700R-4...

I have done an AC and Smog delete. But I still have my stock manifolds and exhaust. I'm wanting to go with hedman short headers, and a single 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with a magnaflow muffler. I'm also wanting it to dump off before the rear axle.

I'm wondering what y-pipe I should go with? And will this be a sufficient upgrade for my stock 305?

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

Here is what I'm looking at for a full exhaust on my car:

Hedman 68470 Street Headers (Shorties)
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-68470/

Hedman 17470 Y-Pipe:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-17470/

MagnaFlow 10416 Performance Muffler:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-10416/

2.5" mandrel bent exhaust piping and no cat. I have read that the Hedman painted parts will rust pretty quickly. So before they are installed I will strip them and refinish them with ceramic paint to ensure a longer life of the part. All together I'm looking at around, $450.00 to do a full exhaust to wake up my 305 a bit. What do you all think?

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

You won't notice much difference at all really - not because the exhaust you picked sucks, but because the 305 just sucks and there's not alot you can do to wake it up much without major chip tuning. But it all swaps to a 350 motor later so it's a good mod!

I figured even the 305 would benefit from a bigger free flowing exhaust. Maybe I'll put off the exhaust until I get the 350 in, and then go 3" to the rear axle.

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

Just recently posted this link in another thread... These guys picked up 35rwhp on an otherwise stock TBI 305 with full exhaust:

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

I really wouldn't bother. The money you spend won't be worth the power you pick up. Just my $0.02.... Put a gear in the rear end (e.g. 3.73:1 ratio), it'll definitely wake the car up and it'll also benefit if you put a better power plant in it.

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

Exhaust seems to be one of the common starting points on the road to more power with these cars. Have you seen the stock y pipe?

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

i know im gonna get **** for this but..............i paid 200 for my exhaust for my dd 305. hedman long tubes true dual 2.5" dumped right before rear axle. no cats. super 40 on each side. i felt quite a difference. and it sounds good to me. neighbors dont call the cops like they do wen my 383 is at home, but blows any fart can away.

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

Well first things first, I need to redo the suspension on my car before I do any upgrades/power adders. So I'm probably gonna either wait to do header/exhaust after a complete suspension rebuild. Or do it after I swap in my 350.

Re: 305 Exhaust Upgrade?

Why cant he just build a exhaust system that will support a 350 or above, and install that on his 305.When its time to do a engine swap he just uses the new existing exhaust system.

I have thought about doing that, but I can spend the money on more important things that the car is needing right now. I'll probably just wait until I get the 350 so I can just do it all at the same time. The exhaust I have now while restrictive is still a nice sounding exhaust.
