PYPES are My favorite exhaust system, but unfortunately I havent seen a kit for 3rd gen camaros. I have a complete system on my 72, a very unique raspy sound.

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
All I'll say is good luck. My Flowmasters are rusting from the inside out right now and they sound like absolute crap, they rattle obnoxiously if I let off the gas from 2,500 or above.
So now I'm doing it right and spending $560 on a stainless steel Borla Stinger catback. Although this is for my Slowstang, and I don't know if Borla has much for the earlier third gens. I hate Flowmasters.

I had flowmasters and they rusted out also... make sure you spend a bit more and get stainless!

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
Today I'm installing the complete stainless steel Magnaflow exhaust system ( with headers in the future ).
Flowmaster sounds mean I'll agree but mines being removed due to the rust & small leaks resulting from age and exposure. I wanted to try Magnaflows well designed direct fit dual cat + cat-back system.
Here's what arrived in 2 large boxes.

Entire system going into my '92 Z28. You can bet I'll report the results soon!

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
I installed this kit about 3 months ago with single cat. I'm assuming this is the 16829 kit from Magnaflow. I replaced the cat with a high flow from Magnaflow. This system is quieter than I thought it would be. Not much louder at idle and cruising speeds compared to stock, but sounds rather nice at full throttle. You will have to work on the mounting at the rear of the car.

I went with the 3in. Flowmaster American Thunder cat back ( It has the 80 series muffler) Flowmaster has a very distinct sound from the others and I like it allot.

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
My personal favorite is the hooker. I feel like they do the best job of controlling volume and rasp, but not changing the overall sound quality. I don't like being able to tell what kind of muffler someone is running. Spintech is also along those lines in my opinion. Both are great mufflers.
....that being said, without a cam and headers to add some bark, my favorite muffler on a stock set up would be Magnaflow. It's not the loudest, but there's very little rasp, and it's such a clean sound.

I love my magnaflow. Quiet while cruising around, no droning. Oh and the system sounds bad a$$ when you are gett'n it.
On a side note I am running Dyno Don headers + y-pipe and no cat. Your experience may vary slightly.

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
Just as I'm gettin ready to go to work, I check this forum lmao!
My installer is having major problems having the drivers side cast iron stock header outlet match up with Magnaflows 3 inch flanged inlet that's supposed to mate together in harmony but no go yet. Temporary problem according to Magnaflows Tech Support guy named Dave. My installer said the pipe for the passenger side is good but not the drivers side due to the existing bolts not going to pass through the new & WIDER flange supplied.
I'm waiting in frustration and anticipation here as measurements are being taken now. Seems I should've installed Hooker headers prior to this complete Magnaflow system so it would be trouble free in my opinion but someone else please tell me that the Magnaflow Direct Fit Catalytic Converter kit should mate to a stock cast iron exhaust manifold w/o any problems. I believe I'm the only one in this world that has this particular setup being installed at the moment.
I took some pics for your viewing pleasure for now...I'm late for work!
Passenger side exhaust:

Drivers Side: Hope it clears after a new pipe is shipped one of these days...

Installer says this wont fit, Bolts dont protude into the drivers side flange:

Passenger side seeming fits ok with a flange. I don't get it yet.

I will follow up with more pics when its completed I hope in time for my July 12th emissions test due date.

Summit carries it under the part number MPE-36479. It's beautiful but right now I'm having fitment problems. Installer didnt want to do major surgery with a torch so he's contacting Magnaflow Tech Support today.

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
wow id love to do that magnaflow setup on my 92
you got my wheels turnin now lol. best sound is all personal prefrence. i had a 80 series flowmaster put on the trans am years ago when it was stock lg4 700r4 and it sounded good but now with the lsx swap ive got all 3in mandrel pipe with custom 14in 3in/out magnaflow with one tail pipe i run that same setup on my 03 yukon but it has long tubes and no cats and it sounds amazing. my 92 z28 i just got has the 80 series on it and being 7years or so since ive driven a 3rdgen what that exhaust it still sounds ok has nice mellow tone inside the car and i like how it sounds just tooling around town but most likely ill throw a magnaflow on this too since the tips on this car look awful i hate tips and whoever did the exhaust its all 2 1/4. here is a clip of it.

Behold the old exhaust pipes leading up to the Flowmaster cats:

As the pics shown earlier in this post, I bought Magnaflows $667 Dual Cat Direct Fit System along with their $474 cat back. I mocked both systems on the garage floor and it was good. Hopefully I get the car today or Saturday to take the rest of the pics.

Let peoples judgement up to people. Saves you the hassle of trying to convince all the world of your version of the truth.
I put a Dynotech cat back on my car in December. Was surprised to see how fast it started corroding. I'm a bit disappointed in that regard.
Still, it sounds subtle which is to my preference. Seeing the nice Magnaflow setup here I might actually save some lunchmoney so I can buy the single cat Magnaflow setup somewhere next year or the year there after.

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
Hi gang, sorry for the delayed response. My gallbladder gave me sudden pain so after a trip to the ER to get it surgically removed, I'm typing on Vicodins
Anyways, yes I got the Magnaflow Dual Cat and Cat Back systems installed and failed for the 3rd time my CT State Emissions test however the '92 Z28 has somewhat of a muted roar as best as I can describe it for the sound you might expect with a catted system. You can expect a louder roar w/o cats but this Magnaflow sure does breathe better and I did notice more MPG and quite possibly a tiny bit loss at low end torque but I'm not sure yet about that. I'm just happy I upgraded to a shiny Magnaflow versus a rusted out Flowmaster. Top end noise has that muted roar and no drone I sense but I will wait til the system "breaks in" in due time.
I thought my new dual cats would make me pass the emissions test with flying colors but it didnt. The CO2 readings were incrementally better since the 1st and 2nd retests. That's another plan of attack and thread while I recover.
Without wincing in pain, I'll take more pics after my next scheduled Vicodin pill:
Dirty surface over the chrome, damn rain soaked highways...

I did not have a Coke can handy to place next to the exhaust curves but I did manage to scrape the bottom most U-clamp bolt threads going over a train track and them damned speedbumps behind a mall unexpectedly at 30 MPH. This pic shows little clearance on stock tire heights.

So in regards to the OP question, the best sounding would eliminate my Magnaflow catted system for now unless you had a lopey cam and no cats.

im getting mine installed monday with a new magnaflow cat. magnaflow does tend to get a little obnoxious with no cats an longtubes though here is a clip of my yukon.

Took a few more...
Drivers Side sticks out about a centimeter, probably another adjustment needed:

Passenger side sticks in but barely noticeable, I need to address this later:

Re: Best sounding exhaust from the CAT to the back
Looks good. I would have them make final adjustments to the "tip" placement ( both flush with the rear cover or even tucked back some) then have it all welded together.
I'm not totally sure but beleave the tires/suspension needs to be under lode when making final adjustments/welding.

Ha,Ha, Yah I figured it was something like that. I have the same set up ( but with the tips cut back about 6in.)with a Magnaflow cat and really like it.

I would angle cut those tips so they are flush with the plane of the car's underside and remain hidden. Looks good.
