Egr coming out of the cat.
I picked up an exhaust system from an 89 iroc 5.7 yesterday and it has an egr pipe running to the catylitic converter and I want to remove it as I'm going to a carbed motor and don't want the egr showing. How can I remove this? Can I just cut the line off near the converter body?

it's an air pipe, not egr

Re: Egr coming out of the cat.
cut it of and plug it somehow. if you don't plug it, you will have a really annoying exhaust leak. i've seen people just crimp the pipe shut and roll it back on itself to seal it, but i always just throw the cat converter in the dumpster where it belongs and run exhaust without it. i live in MN where emissions testing is something that doesn't happen, so i can get away with it...

Re: Egr coming out of the cat.
we dont have emissions here either but im doing it for the ease of installing it, im going to just gut the cat by ramming a pole or something down the middle of the cat to knock all the internals apart, crimp off the air tube, and bolt it in, eventually i want to go to headers so ill do away with it then but for now i just want the ease.

326 IAC 13-1.1-1 of Indiana state law defines that you must have a cat on your car.. For further questions about your state law, I have attached the link. And your 89 doesn't qualify for Antique vehicle.

Re: Egr coming out of the cat.
It's not going into an 89. It's going into my 86 and every state says you must have them but I don't have testing here so I can't get into trouble, also I'm installing the cat for now so when I get my motor in I don't have to worry about running to the exhaust shop right after, I can just bolt my intermediate pipe to the cat, and then bolt my y pipe to my manifolds. Then be able to drive it.

Re: Egr coming out of the cat.
I think it is funny how few people actually know the worth of a converter and the laws.
Just because they dont test for the emissions, dont mean that it is legal. They are required by federal law. A lot of states dont test emissions but they are still required to pass a visual inspection. In other words if it aint there, you fail.
Also, scrap price for a good converter will really surprise you. If you find a place that will grade them, you will get more. I have made as much as $80 and as low as $20 from cats Ive cut off camaros I have parted out. Had a 89 blazer converter bring $120. Imports can be worth much more. Just depends on the amount of material left inside them.
If anyone just wants the converter gone, then replace it with a short piece of pipe. Welded in preferably. Then take an old converter heat shield and weld it on around it. Looks just like a converter from the outside, flows like a straight piece of pipe, and you get the scrap value from the converter. The air tube can just be cut off a crimped over to prevent leaks.

Re: Egr coming out of the cat.
I never told you not to do it. In fact I told you a way to do it so that it would pass a visual. I just made anyone that reads this know that it is in fact illegal federally to do so. That doesnt mean that I agree or follow those laws, but I will state them.
"Under federal law, catalytic converters may not be removed and replaced with "converter replacement pipes" by any person. The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments even prohibit private individuals from installing "converter replacement pipes" on their own vehicles. Anyone who installs such pipes would violate section 203(a)(3)(A) and (B) of the Clean Air Act (Act)."
Would you ever get caught? Probably not. Do I follow it? Maybe..... But once again, I feel obligated to post.
