Options for replacing mufflers on 82 Recaro T/A
Hi, both mufflers on the 1982 Recaro T/A (LU5) I am restoring need to be replaced; however, there does not appear to be a stock replacement option for the dual muffler/resonator configuration from the many auto parts places I have called. (The only offering is a large single muffler as opposed to the two small ones.)
What are my options for retaining the dual muffler configuration? Maybe there aren't any, but I thought this would be the place to find out if there are. Thanks,

From what I have heard a custom fab is the only option. Despite this, please don't be tempted to convert to a single muffler style. The dual mufflers only came on the 82's and are really cool.

Thanks - will keep the dual muffler config and begin looking for an exhaust shop to do the job.

You will probably need two smaller mufflers. Something like this would work

Are you going stock or want something a bit louder?
Check this solution out.

Re: Options for replacing mufflers on 82 Recaro T/A
I took mine off and saved it for posterity. It is a very restrictive set up, and its only value is historical. I replaced it with a single crossflow muffler from Dynomax. While not correct, it certainly cleaned up the underside of the car. In order to make the original set up, you would have to have everything custom made, including the mid pipe that branches off into 2 pipes.
If you really feel like saving it, do your best to clean up the original set up. I removed mine while trying to do as little damage as possible in case I ever felt the need to clean it up and reinstall it. It is stainless, so aside from some surface oxidation, you should be able to clean it up. The brackets in the center from the midpipe to the center pipe between the mufflers are not stainless so plan on cutting them off and replacing.
I just don't believe it is worth the effort to save since it is such a restrictive set up. The Dynomax sounds better, and the car performs better.

BTW - I just finished a resto on my Recaro. I can help you out with those faded buttons on your dash and a few other things. PM me if you are interested and I can point you in the right direction for a few other things I think you are going to need.

Not entirely true... my 83 Z28 has them on it, they also came on some 84 models as well.
It is crazy how restrictive this setup is, even replacing the TT section that goes between the mufflers with 2 mandrel bent elbows would do wonders over what's there now. As soon as I get paint for my car squared away, I plan on replacing my system from the cat back. It's in great shape seeing as it's a Texas/Florida car and has never been north of Georgia to the best of my knowledge. Maybe if there is enough demand for it, I will put it up for sale rather than have the muffler shop scrap it.
