What is your guys' opinion on straight pipes?

Anyone have any experience running them on a 305? I was thinking about getting it done, possibly with glasspack mufflers as well, depending on your input. Do they have a pleasing note? Or does it just sound like a jacked up ******* truck? Also, any performance gains/detriments to be had there? Thanks in advance to all who can sound off.

If you put glasspacks on then it's not straight pipes, straight pipes mean that there is no muffler at all and the exhaust is literally made up of nothing but pipe.

Are you meaning true duals? (where there is 1 pipe for each header all the way out) because if that is what you're getting at then that's a whole different story.

I thought about true duals, but I would like to at least have cats, and that would present ECM problems I would imagine. However.... Would a true dual with nothing on it sound good on a basically stock engine? I wouldnt be opposed to it completely. I also read some threads since I posted this and am actually just thinking of just ditching the single in/dual out brand x muffler for glasspacks, but again, I'm not sure how it would sound or how I would keep the dual exhaust "look". I definitely want to keep both pipes exiting the rear.

Mmk, I think I understand what you're getting at now.

I don't think true dual straightpipes on a stock 305 would sound very good.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with the fabrication and time involved to put true duals on a stock engine. You can get comparable performance and sound results with a good homemade or bought cat-back system. There are a lot of companies out there that make good ones for third gens, and you get to keep your cat like you wanted. You'd still have your two pipes exiting the rear too.

If you just want to swap out the single in-dual out muffler for glasspacks that can and has been done too. (just cut the muffler and 'connect the dots' with extra pipe and your glasspacks) It'll sound pretty similar to this, if not just like it:

Man that sounds pretty damn close to what I was going for. I like it! Does it tend to drone on the highway? I know from previous glasspack experience the second you really get into the powerband things get loud pretty quick, but that's ok as long as it doesn't buzz your head to death on longer trips haha.

Haha oh ok, I figured it was since it looked like the same color as the one in your AV. Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate it.

Re: What is your guys' opinion on straight pipes?

I had short pipes and glass packs behind a 455 HO. At idle and slow cruise it sounded great. Anything faster and it still sounded great but got annoying pretty quickly especially on the freeway. I lengthened the pipes to the rear so it was less annoying to me but probably still annoying to anyone behind the car. Don't know your local laws but you will attract attention.

Don't want any of that! I swear every time an officer sees my car they start looking for reasons as it is. I think i'm going to try and just go with the glasspacks instead. Maybe just cut the muffler off, clamp a T fitting on the pipe and run the glasspacks and the rest of the pipe out the back, in order to keep two pipes? Or is there a better way to go about that?

Search for "true dual". There are loads of threads and pics. Lot of work to do it so it looks good.
