Re: Good exhaust system?
You'll never get louder than uncapped longtube headers.
You can fab up a true dual system, alot of us have them. I have true dual 2.5 " pipes coming out of hedman longtubes, dumped before the rear axle. You just have to be more wary of speedbumps and other things if you go this route as it will cut down on your ground clearance.

Two thrush welded mufflers, see attached pics. Straight pipes won't affect performance (think of a permanent cut-out). My set-up is PLENTY loud though, I had the headers uncapped for a while with turndowns coming off the collectors before but the floor pans can get pretty hot, haha!

Re: Good exhaust system?
Go out and measure how much room there is between the ground and the transmission crossmember, and then subtract the diameter of the dual exhaust pipe you're using. You sure you're comfortable with that?
Any car with 2.90 rear gears definitely isn't fast enough to warrant halving the ground clearance. You can do loud with a single.
This is my setup, but understand that I have a special crossmember that allows me to tuck my pipes up into the transmission tunnel.

Get an engine with decent compression, some decent shorties, a 3" catback and it'll be plenty loud.
Mine is a 3.5" system, and I havent figured out a way to keep these quiet yet.

Here's a video, this was a cold start but you get the idea. I plan to shoot a better one eventually.

Re: Good exhaust system?
I know on my 4th gen, the mufflex tucked way better than my duals. My duals were tucked better than 95% of the duals on 4th gens. They ran to the rearend and stopped.I will get the 4" on my gta tucked just as good. The duals were louder cruising down the highway and during idle, not by much though. Wide open throttle they were equally loud. I actually perfer the single 4" sound over the duals. I have 3 f-bodies, all have single 4" systems with longtubes.
