whats your favorite muffler?
hey guys, ive got a Flowmaster 80 series right now, its been really good to me. has a good sound (with my no cat) and i really like it. problem is that after about 9 years, its rusted beyond repair. i had a tailpipe almost fall off it and welded it back up, but it just kept burning through.
I have a dynomax in my truck, which is also good to me but has rusted out in less than 2 years, so i replaced it with another dynomax due to its good price.
I need to start shopping for a new muffler for the car. I dont think i want something as mellow as the flowmaster or dynomax anymore for it. I want a reason to get rid of the exhaust cut out, i want it to be that loud. a friend has a 4th gen slp cat back with borla, but i dont want something used. any suggestions?

I have a 91 Z28 LB9/MM5 with SLP headers and the SLP TOTL and I really like the sound. At WOT it has an aggress/angry sound. Someone is selling this set up in the for sale section.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
I put a pair of Walker Dynomax Super Turbos on my 1988 Lincoln Mark VII LSC about 15 years and 100,000 miles back. After which they were burned /rusted out.
I contacted Walker, who sent me new mufflers at NC under the Lifetime Warranty(I kept the original receipt).
The muffler shop installed them only charging labor.
I have since put a pair on my 1979 "Y84" "Bandit" Trans Am (403/AT).
They sound powerful on acceleration, no drone, long trip pleasant. I'm sold!

I love the Flowmaster super 10s, it may be too loud if it's a daily driver, but it's aggressive tone is great for a weekend cruiser.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
thanks guys. after talking to the guy i wound up just buying the muffler and cat back from him for $100. its all stainless so its still ok. his car is like mine, a weekend cruiser. this SLP setup has a single in/out borla (which looks almost like just a resonator) which then goes over the axle, and splits at a Y to a dual tailpipe. I looked at my bank account and realized i cant afford to do much. I had big plans this summer for the car (new rear, new muffler, and saving up for full roller rockers) but between house work and the new baby i have no money anymore lol
thanks guys for all the great suggestions. they were all awesome, love hearing the cars roaring too!

I like the sound of bone stock factory or SLP 2OTL. I do admit that my '89 convertible which came with a Magnaflow sounds great now that it's been Frankensteined with factory style tail pipes.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
I think the early SLP 2otL cat-backs were actually Borla mufflers.
A ProXS 3" center inlet, and dual 2.5" outlet would probably make a good replacement for the 2otL muffler if anyone wanted to build a 2otL cat-back or replace a broken 2otL muffler. I'd have to measure my 2otL muffler to be sure of its dimensions.
https://www.borla.com/products/proxs...t__400487.html
To be honest, if I was going to do a true dual willie's style setup with 2.5" tubes in the stock routing I'd probably use this muffler. https://www.borla.com/products/proxs...t__400286.html

I don't know why they ever stopped making the TTL, I especially loved the setup that had the sort of jogged down tips for a while.
Lots of people love the 80 series... they're loud and sound OK. The problem with them is that once you're making some power they tend to be too loud and they're more restrictive than stock mufflers WRT to flow

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
The problem with the dual in/dual out mufflers is that they tend not to flow well. I've never seen actual numbers for the borla, but magnaflow makes a very similar muffler and it's flow isn't significantly over a single in/out with the same size pipe.
My last few setups have all used the same muffler, the dynomax ultraflow welded. I even have one on my TA right now that has gone from car to car to car for like 15years now that finally has a small rust hole in the case and I will need to replace (been resisting it since I will likely go dual 3" or single 4 soon)

I like my Flowmaster 3in system . Ive also ran everything from the factory stock GM muffler, hush glasspacks, flow-pros, dynomax's, etc.. but the best sounding muffler ive ever had was a Borla.

Then again, its not like I'm going to spend $150 to cut one open just to see.
But I love the two on the left look. I like the way its not visually obnoxious but gets the job done all the same.

Just to chime in, my favorite is aero turbines single in/out turbine muffler. I had the AT4040XL (4")on my 6.2L truck and sounded amazing! And even have the smaller AT2525XL (2.5")on my 1.4L turbo dart. The XL have built in resonators where the originals don't. ATOM on eBay has the best prices if your interested.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
I'm really surprised the Flowmaster 80 Series is to mellow.
My stock 5.0 with 3in cat back and dual 3in tail pipes actually shakes the wall of my house when I pull into the car port.
I had to use picture tape on the photos hanging inside just so I did not have to straiten them all the time.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
I have an 80 series still on my t/a. its not that loud either. My wife was adamant i'd wake the baby when backing the car into the garage before a thunderstorm.....sure enough baby slept through it with no problems. I dont think that'll be an option with the loudmouth im gonna get lol

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
I might be interested in the aforementioned setup for sale, but I don't have the AIR system in my car anymore... would it be sacrilege to cut off the AIR tubes on this SLP setup? Probably. Just that I am in NJ... close enough to pick up this setup... but I can't see myself putting all the smog/ A.I.R. system stuff back in.
Sorry to highjack the thread.

Even the speed shop that tuned my car said it was one of the best sounding exhaust systems he had ever heard. Louder at idle than most, but not too loud at WOT like some systems are.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
You want loud and nasty even at idle.... That video RamIt posted of the Hawks Sinister exhaust is the real deal. It really does sound like that, although my engine has a higher pitch scream at WOT. I have the Hawks (Stainless Works) 3.5" system and I'm telling you it is the baddest exhaust of all time on a thirdgen. It is not for the timid though, it does make noise.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
I would imagine there are some options. Look at the Hawks website.
My exhaust system is a chambered muffler with single inlet and outlet, and a hidden turn down behind the bumper. Same exhaust (headers to tailpipe) as used on the Storm Trooper car. Put it this way.... standing outside the car you can feel the pounding idle in your chest.

Re: whats your favorite muffler?
I finally got my loudmouth on. The previous owner removed the original loudmouth muffler and replaced it with a Borla muffler. It does sound good. I attached a video clip of my flowmaster rev and idle and a rev and idle of the new exhaust. New one didn't have much time cuz I frequently **** off the neighbors with this car
