I'm not a fan of typical gm exhaust notes...I like flowmaster type sound but they're everywhere...anyone have any suggestions on a more exotic sound muffler? IE more Ferrari than bigblock?

 

if you want the sound of a high revving mall displacement V12, then get a high revving small displacement V12..

a V8 will always have a lower tone than a V10 or V12.. i personally love the sound of true duals with an X pipe and FLowmaster 40 series deltaflows.. it sounds mean yet refined on a 400ish HP small block Chevy.

 

This is your style.

 

I enjoy two settings.

1. Stock exhaust. Silence. Use a turbocharger and OEM exhaust plumbing/mufflers to deaden all music and surprise unsuspecting victims.

2. Cut-out system. When you want/need to listen, open the cutout. It can be used in variable positions for varying quality note. Also used to surprise unsuspecting victims. Really sounds good through a lopey camshaft cut with a turbine whistle.

 

Tone will never be their due to engine design but I feel like the Borla/corsa type catbacks dont sound like typical V8s compared to Crapmaster

 

Spin lots of rpm... ideally 7000 or more with a flat plane crank that's a big part of the exotic sound...forget the Blowmaster they sound as bad as they flow to my ears.

A good domestic V8 sound with Small Block Chevy in my view requires a dart shp iron block with 4.125 bore, 3.75 stroke for 400 CID+, ported alum heads with at least 10.85 compression, quality long tube headers at least 1 3/4 primary 3 inch primary into x pipe true dual to magnaflow or borla or corsa mufflers of choice.

My 72 vette has a similar set up and has been mistaken for a non-American car based on sound a couple of times by import drivers To my ears best sound requires iron block and x pipe with most domestic v8 engines.

Add twin electric cut outs behind x pipe for volume as needed.

Flowmaster makes the very worst sounding exhaust for most GM exhaust applications in my opinion. I'd rather hear a stock exhaust with a cutout over the typical restrictive flowmaster. However, each car owner should run the exhaust the car owner likes.

Old Windsor Ford 5.0's sound ok with a flowmaster but that's about it.

The old SLP 2OTL sounds excellent on LT1 cars or TPI. LS motors don't sound quiet as good with it. However, how fast is what matters most not sound in my view.

The old SLP Dual/Dual with out ring of silence sounds good...but it's QUITE during normal driving. I've had some one argue with that my 305 TBI RS had to have a 350 because of how the old SLP Dual/Dual sounded. The SLP D/D had also caused my 383 LS1 to be mistaken as a TPI 350 a few times...until the D/D screamed at WOT...too much fun with this exhaust.

The very best is of course what you like best for your car.

 

Corsa and borla will get you a little different tone. The big reason the SBC will not sound like that is they are still in the stone age with 2 valve heads and low RPMs. I agree though flowmaster sounds like *** personally I like magnaflow and an extra resonator

 

try a glasspack maybe? spin your motor to 7 grand and let the sound scream from a 12 inch glasspack. I think it makes it sound good like a classic muscle car, yet not obnoxious until you really get on it.XD

 

He is trying to get away from the typical GM / flowmaster high resonance exhaust note not reproduce it.

 

I know, I was half joking. I wonder if there's some solution to make it sound like an exotic. Equal length headers or something like that?
