What would happen if I took a sawzaw and chopped off all my exhaust right before it meets the cat and drive it like that ?
Will it Crackle and Pop ?
Will I Smell Gas Fumes?
I would at least add some pipe to keep fumes from your cabin if not a muffler while you're at it. Keep in mind that deleting your cat will give you an EGR code which will result in your SES light being on a lot.
But it's your car, and if taking a sawzall to your exhaust makes you happy, then do it!

You will not like it. Assuming you want it to sound good, that's not the way to do it. You will get "gassed out" in the car (even with the windows open) and it will just sound super load but not a "good" sound. What would you like to accomplish?
JonJon you get a "B" for at least asking first before you do that.? wait, you haven't done it have you?
if you have, change your grade to F
and put the hat on....
I never said I did it I just asked a question seeking the correct answer a lot of people on here are jerks everything don’t have to be serious Don’t argue
Hey hoss calm down, no one is being a jerk. First of all I can tell you are a young in and trust me I had some questions like this 20+ years ago. The exhaust is there for a few good reasons that have already been covered. Depending on what state you are in that cat will keep you out of some trouble. You will not be happy with the way it would sound. You won't be able to hear Van Halen on the tape deck, or your girl talking sweet to ya. Here in my state the laws are easy going but they will give you a ticket for overly loud/no mufflers and Alabama is usually labled as 10-15 years behind everyone else. Save up some money and buy you some good headers, y pipe, and a good brand exhaust and enjoy that third gen! You got to read your question and try and read through 35 year old + eyes and you will see the comedy in it. That's why you got some of the answers you got. Trust me any question you have will be answered here when it comes to a third gen. If you do sawzall that thing to death please find a Joe Dirt wig and a video camera and film us some videos of some Richard Rawlings donuts.
JonJon sorry, I'm an old geezer and just playin around I guess my skin is thicker wasn't meaning to hurt your feelings
have to say even when in 1978 I got my first hot rod a beater 69 Z28 - (yes really) I just never really cared for loud exhaust then or now
I really despise the import fart cans so if you are young I give you a "B" for not hot rodding a Honda
And whatever else you do, stay away from those japTOYlets. All the help you need with your thirdgen is right here, and even though it is sometimes hard to tell when someone is being serious, the information is usually hidden somewhere in the responses....
Exhaust gas in a tube, hot rapidly flowing exhaust gas in a well insulted tube especially, contains alot of energy.
The energy is put to work a number of ways. In naturally aspirated systems, each exhaust gas pressure pulse can be timed for cylinder evacuation (header tubes & camshaft timing) for either wasteful (racing and clearing the cylinder) or economical (efficiency and fuel savings) methods.
In turbo application the hot flowing exhaust gas is directed through a turbine, which causes a compressor wheel to increase the kinetic energy of air molecules by scooping them up and accelerating them towards the engine as an attempt to increase air pressure (air pressure at rest, say, in a tire, is measured as a difference between the number of collisions per unit time on either side of the tire, since there is no difference in temperature there will be no additional kinetic energy in the air molecules on the higher pressure side). In other words, when we take an engine flow rate at some RPM, we typically use ambient air temperature (or slightly warmer) for density calculations, regardless of what pressure ratio is run, because we assume fuel complacency conditions are always being met. For example you wouldn't build an 10:1 compression engine on boost and try to run it on 87 octane gasoline, ever, it doesn't make sense. So we are just saying that for example vehicle combinations that actually make sense (fuel quality condition is met) the air temperature is negligible now because that is part of satisfying the fuel condition, that is, to be ensuring a proper intake air temp.
long story short is, you want a turbo. So focus on learning about turbos. But for now, understand that keeping hot exhaust in a tube for a nice long distance from the engine is a good thing, it will improve performance, increases cylinder scavenging and the engine is designed to work with nice long and not-large exhaust tubes to maintain its efficiency and economy. Yes for wide open FULL POWER you would want a larger tube, but this is strictly for engines that just STAY at the high rpm all the time. If you held an engine at 5k 6k 8k rpm for racing constantly and thats all you do with it. Then you will use larger tubes etc... But I am guessing you just drive the car on the street like I do. So keep the small long tubes for now. Focus on getting a turbo which will give you the "big tubes" without having to use large tubes.
what do you think happens when you cut off your exhaust? do you think it will sound great when you rev it up to redline or hit the rev limiter (assuming you have one) in park or neutral
(seems to be a thing with some "people" who think they have bad-*** cars but are afraid to go fast)? ive seen this trend recently and thought to myself "what are these absolute morons doing this for?"
seriously think, what happens if you take the chimney off your wood stove in your house?
common sense goes very far in life, hone yours razor sharp .then the answers to these kinds
of questions will just happen naturally inside your head without embarrassing yourself
by asking others things you already know are extremely stupid AND dangerous.
always run things over in your mind and gauge how intelligent it seems to you BEFORE putting it into words, this is called having a "filter"
so ,no do not cut off the exhaust,do not remove the air cleaner,do not add mothballs to the gas,do not rev the car while in park or neutral.
power and speed cost money to do properly, there is no shortcut to good sounding exhaust or more horsepower.

It was meant to be a joke everybody just chill I never said I was gonna do it for real lots of people on here are just so negative geez
I hope this doesn't come across as snobby or mean , cause that's not my intent .....
The reason your "joke" was met with such a negative response is that this is a tech board first and foremost and while a bit of side conversation is tolerated the primary function here is to pass along factual technical information about our beloved third gen F bodies . When a new poster comes along asking outlandish questions like your no exhaust question it's not all that easy to decipher whose "joking" and who actually thinks an open exhaust would be a great idea . And believe me , for every new guy "joking" about such nonsense , there are 5 who actually ask things like this ARE a good idea , so hopefully this explains a bit why you got flamed by the forum regulars .
asking questions is necessary when you have no idea, are a newb or troll....
BUT contradictory to "cool videos" on youtube straight piping or cutting
off exhaust isn't good, doesn't sound good and is shunned upon
by everyone whether they are a car person or not
I just bought a 3rd gen acouple months ago,
Car came with the cats and everything else cut off.
I drove it that way a handful of times to work (about 25miles round trip) and yes it crackles and pops and makes it get super hot inside the car.
being around 90-95 outside and no AC made it horrible.
also had a friend drive along side me and he said flames would sometimes come out the side
I have yet had time to put full exhaust on it.
my neighbors most likely hate me because I leave for work at 3:30am.
and yes I live in ca so its not a good idea to keep it this way

How the hell do you get through CA emissions with an exhaust like that? I don't live in Cali but there are countless threads on how tough they are.

Above is your answers to your question JonJon.
Oh no theres no way in hell.
After I fix it I have to get it smogged.
Unfortunately I just moved, got myself a townhouse with only 2 car garage and any other cars I have to park out in the street. The 3rd gen sits in the garage and my DD chevy Cruze, has to park out in the street.
I dont really trust it out there so i might end up selling the firebird
