Updated Cat Back Opyions List

Does anyone have a good list of the options? I know there are a lot and they have changed over the years...

what I am looking for: single 3" intermediate, all mandrel bent, somewhat tame sounding straight thru design muffler (no baffled mufflers) dual tailpipes and good fitment

I used the Hooker Super Competition 3" cat back with the Aero Chamber muffler. It fit perfect even over the panhard bar support. Great fit, great price (under $450) and sounds killer. Not loud @ low RPM's and really gets throaty as the power kicks in.

Re: Updated Cat Back Opyions List

Do a search, someone actually compiled a decent list but it may be dated or check out YouTube (tons of videos on installs and sound). Did you check out the Magnaflow? You can get the Y-pipe, Cat (if you need it) and cat-back. I have that system from the manifolds back on my car and I am pretty happy with the sound, its not super loud at idle or cruising but when you step on it its got a good sound IMO. The Install was straight forward with good fit on the cat and cat-back and my buddy even welded it in for me. The only thing that ppl mention with it is the tail pipe design, its kind of love or hate it...

Re: Updated Cat Back Opyions List

thanks, the list I saw was form many, many years ago, figured there would be other options now.

I do like Magnaflows, price is pretty steep, but it is stainless.

Hookers are baffled mufflers so no good to me... just exploring all options prior to pulling the trigger,

Re: Updated Cat Back Opyions List

Keep an eye out on Amazon marketplace if your looking for a deal, I found the Magnaflow catback there for $340, it was returned by someone and unopened/new and bereeloutdoors.com had an insane sale on the Y pipe for $140 with a coupon.

When you say baffled, are you talking about mufflers with "packing" to absorb sound? If so they call those types "absorptive" nowadays and the Aero Chamber is not one of them. Mufflers without are referred to as "reactive"- RSC, Reactive Sound Cancelation. This design uses "chambers" with flow holes. Is this what you mean by "baffles". Some mufflers will use a combo of both technologies. Below is a link which is a good read and describes in detail the above technologies that goes into muffler design . It also gives you some examples of each tech. The article only lists muffler brands (Flowmaster, Corsa, B&B and Hooker) that contributed to the article. This article should help you on which muffler type will suit your needs so you can make an educated decision.

Re: Updated Cat Back Opyions List

I guess I should have said "Chambered" instead of "Baffled"

I don't want anything similar to the Flowmaster chambered design as they are very restrictive in a turbo application, The Borla still looks to be the best set up.. Big $$$ thou

I have the Borla catback system with Doug's headers. I had to get a shop to make a custom y-pipe with exhaust that goes back to the Borla (which was really expensive). It sounds incredible, which somewhat justifies the price. However my biggest grief with this catback is that it splits off into 2 tailpipes before the muffler, so if you put in the included blockoff plate, all the exhaust will go through the muffler and out 1 tailpipe.
If you put in one of the included restrictor plates, then exhaust will go through the muffler and out 1 tailpipe, and also some exhaust straight out of the other tailpipe bypassing the muffler. There is no way to direct all exhaust through the muffler and out both tailpipes. The included restrictor plates are 3 different sizes to allow a custom choice of sound allowance.
I do not like this feature because I dont like ridiculously loud exhaust, but I do like having 2 functional tailpipes. With the Borla catback this is not possible, so I opt to have normal-sound-level exhaust at the cost of having only one functioning tailpipe, the other tailpipe never having exhaust go through it so it makes me feel like a phony.

There is no way to direct all exhaust through the muffler and out both tailpipes. The included restrictor plates are 3 different sizes to allow a custom choice of sound allowance.
I do not like this feature because I dont like ridiculously loud exhaust, but I do like having 2 functional tailpipes. With the Borla catback this is not possible, so I opt to have normal-sound-level exhaust at the cost of having only one functioning tailpipe, the other tailpipe never having exhaust go through it so it makes me feel like a phony.
this is the reason I like the Borla, if I go that route I would put a cutout in place of the restrictor and be able to adjust sound on the fly.

how is the fitment of the Borla? I assume it would be very good?

While not installed yet, that's what I have.
