I want a better exhaust sound (tone) and some more hp/tq.
For those reasons I decided to plan my new exhaust based on Hooker 2460, the Doug´s D901 which I will customize at its
collector so that it will flow out of the headers into the 2,5" pipes and then either into option 1 or 2.
What do you think would SOUND best?
Or are both options a total waste of time and effort? After the Y-pipe it would go into a 3" powerstick catback. The converters
must be there, the question is about the placement of the x-pipe... Or maybe an h-pipe?
Im happy to hear your honest feedback!
The cat´s wont get out! And I need the y-pipe connection also because my catback is a single 3" diameter.
But besides that we can talk about that. (-:
Im no exhaust expert. But putting an X pipe in an exhaust system that is merged into a Y pipe seems like a waste of time. The X pipe is meant to help balance exhaust pulses from two individual exhaust systems and improve scavenging. I dont really see that improving when merging both into a Y.
Honestly it is kind of unpredictable how exhaust will sound. I once had a warmed over El Camino that somebody loved the sound (super smooth and high pitched) and they went and bought the same sort of exhaust for their truck and were really unhappy that it did not sound anything like mine. Why was mine smooth and high pitched? I don't know!
I've come to the conclusion that the secret sauce to a good sounding car is not this or that exhaust and muffler, but simply make the best choice of parts that compliments the engine combo. When you build right, the sound just comes with it.
And compression always sounds good. Odds are if you ever salivated over the sound of a car it probably had high compression.
The sound that you can manipulate comes from the muffler, the rest of the system is designed primarily for fitment without sacrificing function too badly. Since you need a cat, I'd keep the D901 y-pipe as-is and put a single high flow cat behind it for packaging simplicity. The x-pipe is unnecessary; if you were serious about performance this discussion would be about long tube header fitment.
I did something similar for a friend sounded great and even better after he tossed that **** flowmaster muffler and replaced it with a magnaflow. I am thinking about recreating it for my self when I do my next exhaust
Forget the x-pipe. No room for it. Get the flow master Y with the 3" outlet and make your whole exhaust 3". Whatever muffler will sound good but flowmaster sounds the best
