3rd Gen-LS Exhaust

Does there exist a true dual exhaust system for the 3rd gen with an LS? Some additional info: Trans is a 4L60E, have UMI torque arm & cross member, SFCs, and long tube headers. I have seen many threads with custom systems and most threads are very old, so didn't know if anyone (Speed Engineering, Hawks, Summit, Speed Zone, etc.) has come out with anything since.

As an alternative, I am also considering Hawk's 3rd gen Y-pipe with a Hooker "double hump" cross member (w/torque arm mount) and then any 4th gen cat-back. Anyone done either of these two configurations? Any issues with stock panhard bar and 4th gen cat-back fitment? Hoping by using the double hump will prevent any clearance issues. Thank you.

Here is a pretty decent list. If you find something else let me know so I can add it to the list.

Re: 3rd Gen-LS Exhaust

Holley used to make a dual set-up for these cars but the only one that is "close" is the speed engineering set-up. It will require a lot of fab work and will be insanely loud. I would stick with a 3.5" or 4" single. It will be cheaper and less abusive to your eardrums. I had a custom true dual set-up fabricated from the speed engineering kit. I've played with different mufflers and resonators but there is still drone at cruising speeds. I eventually will stop convincing myself I need this set-up and go with a Mufflex 4" single.

Re: 3rd Gen-LS Exhaust

Thanks guys...in your experiences, will the Hawks Y-Pipe & Cat-Back (both pictured above in my post) be sufficient regarding length? In other words, will they meet? I am getting mixed feedback as some say that is all you need and others say they will not meet and you would need a "middle" section to connect the two (Y-Pipe & Cat-Back). Thanks again!

Re: 3rd Gen-LS Exhaust

Assume they won't meet up perfectly. Even if they are close, they likely will need a little fab work. Any decent exhaust shop should be able to make that connection with ease.

Im at the same cross roads on my build but I’m researching and saw the speed engineering ls1 true dual exhaust. It looks like it would fit up on a third gen.

your thoughts?

Re: 3rd Gen-LS Exhaust

Was considering that one too...it is their 4th gen system and with some mods would work in your 3rd gen, but would require some mods. The rear portion should fit just fine (as long as no panhard bar issues. Although they do offer a relocation kit if needed)...it is the front that might offer some challenges (i.e.: ground clearance issues if yours is lowered, etc.). This system mounts below the trans crossmember and being straight, wouldn't have the ability to "tuck up" if using a double hump crossmember.

Re: 3rd Gen-LS Exhaust

Holley use to sell a complete long tube header, true dual full system that worked in conjunction with the double hump x-member you posted. It was called the Blackheart series system for our cars. They discontinued it. I managed to buy one from jegs or summit even after they discontinued. I looked up the part number and called different distributors till I found one in a warehouse. They didn't even know they had it... it was an interesting experience.

I didn't manage to find the Blackheart series stainless long tube's that go with it, but the hawks stainless long tube's are so close, I think it will work. Have it all in my basement as the build is not at that stage yet.

Could try to call around too. I was looking for the 304 stainless version for a manual. They also had a 408 stainless for less, both manual and auto. Maybe there is still a kit someplace covered in dust. It is'nt cheap, but from the mock up fitment I did, the fit is the best I have ever seen. Worth the price (to me).

Re: 3rd Gen-LS Exhaust

I did a Gen V LT1 swap and used the Hooker LSX crossmember. It works great with the now discontinued Blackheart dual exhaust kit. I only had to fabricate a small portion of the exhaust to meet the dual exhaust. For someone doing a custom exhaust, the Hooker double hump crossmember allows the exhaust to tuck further up for better ground clearance.

Mind sending a pic of the y-pipe area showing your fabrication? Thx!

Looks fantastic. Did you do the welding yourself?

What's after the headers? Are those cats?

Yeah, short 3" cats. I had a speed shop who specialized in cages do the welding since they could tig. Since the system is 304 stainless I wanted it tig'd.
