best header on a budget?

hey guys.. bent a couple of pushrods in my '86 so i'm saying screw it and putting in a 350, tired of the 190hp dog..

at the same time i want to put in a set of half-decent headers..

i'm thinking Edelbrock TES.. i already have a 3" catback, should i just stick with that?

the TES headers come with a y-pipe right? does the y-pipe weld to the cat or are there flanges so i can bolt in my cat

I can get my set from work for about 25% off of $340, is that a good deal?

anything else i should know about before doing the swap? heat shield or anything?

thanks guys

I have heard that the edelbrocks aren't the best for a 350. I'm gonna get some hedman ones for mine. can you get those at a discount too? if so in my opinion that is the way I would go, SLP are the best but they're like twice as much too :-)

The Edelbrock will definately be better than the manifolds. If you're looking to squeeze out every last bit of HP then don't get the TES. I've heard Hedman and Hooker make some good ones for cheaper than SLP. Considering Summit wants $313 for the TES sounds like you're getting a decent deal. Just be sure though that the y-pipe is a 3".

You can get the TES that will bolt to your cat. But, you don't want to do that.

Go with the ones made for '86-later TPI single cat. That will have the 3" slip-fit at the cat that you want. Then get a 3" direct-fit cat. You may have to slightly modify the connection to the cat-back, but you'll be happy with the results.

I know you said "budget". But, there's a big performance difference between "least cost" and "least cost done right".

Even more expensive but very practical is ceramic coating like Jet Hot. Most suppliers are offering that as an option these days.

If I were you, I'd see if I could get that 25% discount applied to a brand other than TES.

thanks for the replies, guys.. my budget for the headers is about 500 bucks (reason being my shortblock is gonna cost me 750 if I build it myself and i'm gonna get World Products heads)

SLP is a lot of cash, i know, but they're the best..i'm leaning more towards Hooker or SLP..anyone have any part numbers I could use when I order?

btw: Do the SLP headers come jet-hot coated? Same with the Hookers, do they?

I would rather get a decent header for about 500 bucks jet-hot coated than a 300 dollar header that's not..

If you are willing to spend $500 on headers go ahead and get the SLP headers. There is a group purchace going on now. You can get the SLP non coated headers for $415 and $595 coated. I would scrape up another $95 and get them coated. Check out the "Spohn Slp Group Purchase!" post.

For the Hooker SC shorties - 2055, or 2055-1 for coated. $349.99 and $625.99 from Summit, respectively.

If you can get the 2055s coated for $95, sounds like quite a deal.
