I had the electronic cutout from Empire Motorsports on my car-for about a week. I had so many problems and it was nothing like they promised. First the motor wasnt powerfull enough to open the plate when it was closed, so I would have to poke it with something to open. Then sometimes at WOT, the exhaust would push it closed. There is a manual cable version from summit/jegs that looks good, but I havent tried it or heard anything about it yet. I just run my cutout open all the time.

I have a silly question for you guys with cutouts. Do they sound good? My fiance has a 99Z with a cutout and I love the sound, but was wondering if it would sound good on my 305 TBI. Thanks in advance.

where do the cutouts go? right on each header and then to the y-pipe or after the y-pipe before the cat?

Where ever you want! I have yet to seem them installed before the cat and on the y-pipe. Most of them are installed on the intermediate pipe right before the axle or right after the axle and next to the muffler. I don't like cut-outs but if I did I would definatly make it exit after the axle. There's no reason to have a cut-out before the axle (unless you've got side exhaust or true duals going straight back). For a daily driver, I don't feel like having the exhaust fumes right under me, they're better off going into the poor soul behind me .

Where should you put it? It depends, are you going to open it only at the track or are you going to drive around town on public streets with it open?

If your going to use it for the strip only - then before the cat or right on each header if you have room.

If your going be driving around town with it open, put it near the back of the car.

My reasoning behind this is sound-its going to be really loud if you put it in the front near the header. JPrevost has a good point about the exhaust gasses too. Eather way dont let a cop catch you driving around with it open--noise pollution will be the least of your troubbles

i had/have the pull cable cutout on my car. it was cool while it lasted. first off the cable was always breaking(i guess it got brittle from the heat) and eventually the plate inside broke and would just spin in circles. i had it welded up and that was the end of that. i also had it in the ypipe before the cat. no problems with fumes at all. i really cut down on my ground clearence i have some problems going over big speed bumps unless i am completely crawling over them.

mine is on the pipe going into my muffler so i can get at it just kneeling down behind the car. its just a bolt-on style, and cost $75 at nick's muffler here in plano. sounds soooo much better than runningn through a muffler, and after donig some runs with it capped and some runs with it open, i run about .3 faster with it open, so i got two birds with one stone!

i would probably run it open at the track only...not around town. so as of now...behind the cat sounds good.

It's just a pipe that branches off of wherever you install it that dumps the exhaust right there. They have a few different ways of opening and closing depending on what you get, like a screw-on cap, a plate held on with wingnuts, or a butterfly valve. They basically bypass the muffler and everything behind the cutout.

Strangly enough, when i had my 80 series welded at the local exhaust shop, i told them i like the sound but wouldn't mind haveing something louder in the future, and he suggested a cut out, and he told me that as long as i wasn't running it full open (as long as i had some plate on there) that it WOULD be legal...
Didn't make any since to me..

That's gonna depend on your local laws. I know here (or was it Georgia?) that if you bypass or have any method of bypassing a muffling system, that it's illegal. Doesn't matter if it's open or not, if it's there, it's illegal. Like I said though, depends on local laws.

Quicktimeperformance.com offers an electric cutout that seems to be the one to beat. Comes w/ a warranty and all, and the price is relatively reasonable. just thought i'd let anyone know who'd be interested. i'll probably pick one up once i find some extra money laying around
