loudest muffler
loudest muffler
I'm currently running a flowmaster muffler, gutted cat, and pacesetter headers. My car sounds good, but i'd like it to be louder. I was wondering what's gonna be the loudest muffler i can get my hands on. I've heard that the dynomax ultra flow series and spin tech mufflers are the ones to beat. Any insight?

I'm happy with my Hooker Aero Chamber, getting 3" exhaust will make it louder. Course if you want really loud a single chamber flowmaster is really loud, but you might get in trouble with the sound police, they're illegal for street use. There's a sound clip of my exhaust in the sig.
so would i be able to run a single chamber muffler (one inlet, one outlet) and figure a way to still have my dual pipes running out the back, or would i have to run dual exhaust.

Who sells single chamber flowmasters? I always thought they were discontinued. I don't see them on summit/jegs.
EDIT: ahh ...now I see them listed "Delta Force Race Mufflers".

i was just emailed by a guy that works at an exhaust shop that said the single chamber mufflers sound like hell unless you have about 500 hp running through them. Anyone actually running them?

The 1 chamber I heard had 520HP running through it so I don't know. (It was GR8!!) But I think a few here had them, use the search feature.
thats kind of what i thought. But i'm new to this, so i'm going off what i'm told. But the add in summit says the flowmaster single chambers are for bracket racers or circle track racers w/ 200-275 hp.
you could get the dynomax bullet muffler. its small and is loud. my brother has it on his 86 sport coupe with headman headers and y pipe and a dynomax cat. and u can hear that car coming from the next street over and as u get on it really hard its loud as hell.
I talked to the rep at flowmaster, he said for me to go with the single chamber if i don't mind one tail pipe instead of duals. As far as the dynomax bullet goes, i've been looking into them, but never heard one in person. Will it really blow my flowmaster out of the water?

yes the dynomax bullet muffler will blow the flowfaster out of the water. becuz my brother had an 80 seriers flowmaster and took it off to do his full exuast from headers to tail pipe and yes it blew the flowmaster so far away. if u want loud the bullets good. and it looks like a a straight piece of pipe with a small amount of fiberglass around it in the inside to muffle the sound a hair. so basiclly u will be runnin a staright pipe really if u look at it.

You can't compare the 80 Series to that, the 1 chamber is a real comparison.
I like the idea of running either the bullet or the single chamber flow before the axle, but I'd like to do so and figure out a way to split my pipes so i have duals out the back. I know i can do it, but don't wanna be put in the poor house either. Anybody know if they make a "T" exhaust adapter?

I found a shop where I live that makes something like this:
[].............[] <- Tips
[].............[]
.\=======/
.......[]
/===/
[]
[] <- goes over axel.
It is basicaly a 'T' shape, only, where the = sign is, there are some sort of muffler there. They are a cross between glasspacks and something else. The whole thing is made out of stainless steel and costs around $80 I think.
Disregard the ... they are for spacing. Sorry about that. didn't want to take the time trying to figure out how to post a pic.

I recently disassembled my exhaust system piece by piece, and started the car each time to see how it'd sound.
My regular flowmaster 40 series with dual cats had a nice low rumble. And when you stepped on it... it was still low and sorta quiet.
Running straight off the Y pipe produced a deeper rumble at idle.. but sounded like race car when you revved it. It turned into a high pitched "blat" sound... and flames shoot out when ya backfire.
Running straight off stock exhaust manifolds literally vibrated a picture off the wall in the house. Don't rev it, trust me.
I now have the Flowmaster 40 back on with gutted cats. It's more "rumbly" than it used to be, but it "echos" when you get on it. Produced a nice vibration in the car while idling at a light tho.
So if you want loudest without being over obnoxious... I'd say run a pipe straight off the Y to the back.

what i'm leaning towards doing is putting a single chamber flowmaster in before my axle or where my cat is, and then having a custom Y fabricated so i can still have my dual look.... still playing w/ the idea of a cutout though

Next week I'm going to try to get this done. I checked with a local muffler shop and they said they could do it, so we'll see. Y the pipe as it comes over the axle into two 2.5s, run one straight back with one 2.5 1-chamber flowmaster there and another one on the other pipe on the driver side, too.

I'll post here after I get it done, but unfortunately I only have a 305 with the 2.5" intermediate.
Flowmasters aren't 'straight through' design so they probably don't flow as good as others, but after a future engine swap I'm not going for over 280 hp or so, so it shouldn't hurt, but I might need to go with a 3" intermediate pipe, too. I just like the flowmaster sound. I had a 3" one chamber on both my past chevy 350 trucks and a crossflow on my past '91 350 Z28 and was satisfied with all, but I do like the loudness of the one chambers. It has been several years since I bought a one chamber, and I could've swore those things were like $50 a piece, now they're about $70. Oh yea, I've never had trouble with inspection or cops on the one chambers, even though they're supposed to be illegal for street use. Everyone else has glasspacks on their trucks and they're twice as loud and annoying as those Flowmasters. Especially when they run tiny pipes and 3" echo tips.
