Catback that doesn't drone, any suggestions???
I'm looking for a catback that doesn't drone too bad. Right now I have the American Thunder flowmaster, and it's not quite what I expected. I'm considering the hooker, SLP 2 on the left, and edelbrock. Any suggestions?
Edelbrock RPM Series Cat-Back!
I had the Flowmaster exhaust and I hated the look of the single sided tailpipes. I didn't like the metallic exhaust sound, I like the low, low rumble of the Edelbrock at idle and the powerful roar when I floor it, not the tinny rasp sound of the Flowmaster. I also like the look of a tucked-in tailpipe on each side of the rear.
The Flowmaster droned like a son of a bitch ANNOYING! The Edelbrock is a lot better for interior drone.

I had the same problem with the flowmaster I just took off. Too much interior noise. I replaced it with the hooker aerochamber and it made a huge difference. I think it picked up some power too.
Miss that flowmaster tone though.

The flow on mine isn't loud, it just drones on the highway... and when I rev it it's just a hollow metallic sound that isn't to great.

'87 LB9 305 TPI, pretty well stock as of yet. Just K&N's, removed baffles in intake, JET TPI airfoil, flowmaster american thunder. I'm thinking about either full hooker or else full SLP exhaust, but the SLP would put a HUGE dent in my wallet... so huge it's bigger than the amount of $ I have right now
What is this "Drone" I keep hearing about with Flowmasters?? What you mean by drone, I have Flowmasters, and I love them, nice and low and deep while cruising and idling(when they should be)... and really aggressive and scary sounding when given some push, whats the problem.

ChevyLuva3: Take a long trip somewhere, like I did from Midwest City, OK(OKC pretty much) to someplace far away like St. Louis, Missouri, and tell me you don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm sorry, but wtf are you talking about? Not only did I expect it to sound different, it DID sound different, it just doesn't sound how I want it to sound. There is a cat on it, but I'm almost positive it's hollowed out from age. I'm not saying it's bad, it's definitely better sounding than stock. I've had people asking me if "have an engine under there", but it's just not the sound I'm looking for. When you rev it, like I said, it sounds hollow and metallic, with alot of crackling and poping on the down rev(not saying that is bad either, but it's WAY more than I'd like).

You do not need 3" pipes on a stock 305, which is 1 of the things causing it to sound like that. I know people with 350's running around 360HP and they have 2 1/2-2 3/4 exhaust after the a 3" converter, (they don't have TPI though) and with Flowmasters they sound incredible. This is common when 3" exhaust is used on a stock 305, especially Flowmasters. If the converter is that way, it can also be making it sound like that, seen it before too.

I HAVE AN 89 LB9 305
no headers and a single cat with the edelbrok catback and if you are looking for low rumble at idle and awsome sound when you get on it find someone with the edelbrok system and listen to it!!
at highway speeds it doesnt bother me but its hard to say what is good for someone else.
