removing catalytic convertor

Hi Everyone,

I live in the UK and it is perfectly legal to remove the catalytic convertor over here. I have bought a replacement section of exhaust to replace the cat, but I noticed that the cat has a smaller pipe going into the side of it. The Haynes manual says it is part of the air management system. What is this pipe for and what do I do with it when the cat has been removed? Do I leave it loose under the car, or block it off or what?

Any help anybody can give me would be much appreciated
Thanks,
Peter

That's the A.I.R. pipe. It runs to a pump that's belt driven, which you can remove. It pumps air into the catalytic convertors to help the catalyst work, and also pumps into the exhaust manifolds. Until I replace my cats (I have bypasses on them, but I require cats for emissions here), I've just left the pipe open.

you can leave it open. i'd suggest remove the smog system with that pipe though, if you dont have to have it

Yup, you'll now be able to remove the air pump and bracket, all that unnecessary tubing to the cat, all the extra vac lines and sensors...You'll really clean up the engine bay!

How do these cars end up overseas!! Do you sit and steer from the other side? Just find it odd, that's all.

Thanks for the help guys - I'm nearly done fitting the exhaust. As to how I drive it, well, I sit on the left side of the car as normal (for you guys anyway), but I also have to drive on the left which means I drive next to the kerb of the road.

The only real problem is trying to overtake - can't see a thing

And yep - these cars are definitely considered imports over here - bear in mind that fuel costs about £3.50 ($5) a gallon, and you'll understand why not many people use them!!
