Floor Jack Idea
Floor Jack Idea
Maybe I am the only one here that hates jacking the front of the car under the crossmember. The shape of the crossmember and the fact that there is usually oil on it makes me nervous of the car slipping of of the jack crushing the oilpan. On my car at least the Y pipe is just a little lower than the crossmember and I always wind up with the jack pad just barely hooking the crossmember. Plus add to this that my shop floor is not real smooth and the car has to roll forward with the jack. There is a hole in the crossmember that is about a 1/2 inch in diameter so I turned a deal on my lathe that just slips into the jack where the pad slips in. On the other end I just made a 1/2 inch diameter stud that fits in the hole on the crossmember. I am about 260 lbs so I have to jack the car up to do anything under it, and this will hopefully save me some time and give me some piece of mind that the car will not slip off.

That's a nice looking part!! Good work.
I am kinda surprised to hear of anyone having trouble jacking on the crossmember though. I have been jacking my car there for years with a 3 ton floor jack. Never had it slip even a little!! I guess I am lucky...

i've never had a problem jacking it up either.. and if your working under your car you should use jack stands, don't ever trust your jack.. :nono:
It hasn't slipped, yet.
But any how, thanks for the compliments and I must say that in the last couple weeks I have used it several times and it is alot more comforting with it on there.
Oh yeah, it is just made out of a piece of 1 15/16" steel shaft.

I haven't survived the last 10 years of logging and now millwrighting in a sawmill by putting my big *** somewhere that it doesn't belong.

I had mine slip off & bend the center link into the oil pan. I was able to hammer the oil pan back in shape but the center link was FUBAR.

Well, i dont believe that 1/2 inch thing will work for a long time !! All the weight of the front of the car stand on that little thing ??? The surface of the crossmember on what that thing stand, will crush sooner or later !!!
I use a regular 3 tons jack since almost 10 years on my Camaro and i never had any slipping problems. If you do it carefully you not suppose to have problems, and dont forget to use jack stands.

Really cool idea- good design and workmanship!
Edit- Taking a second look, I would try to chamfer the nose (the part that actually goes into the X-member) quite a bit more, to make it easier to get lined up....
Not to take away from a good idea, though.
I have had the same thoughts as you when jacking the car up on a regular jack. Is it going to shift? Is it smashing the #$&* out of my y-pipe or oil pan? and so on...

my stock y pipe make it difficult to jack on my x-member also. I use my SFCs. I went through some old paper work and foun that the precious owner paid pver $1400 to replace the enitre exhaust system, and it was all stock!! The factory dual cats were over $800 alone

I think its more an understanding problem then a strength problem. The little tit sticking out doesnt lift the car at all, just locates the jack under the crossmember. Just slip that point into the small hole center of the crossmember so the jack can't slip out. There really shouldn't be much side force. All of the lifting force is then applied to the larger diameter below the tit. Which is actually alot more surface area then most floor jacks have on the crossmember. I know my floor jack only hits on a couple of the points when lifting my car. Maybe 2 small pressure points total. The floor jack really doesnt fit the crossmember well at all, and i'm always afraid it'll slip.
