Taking out the AC

Would it be possible, or work well to take the AC parts off and cut a sheet of metal to the same shape and screw it back on with the existing holes ?

i dont have a dig camra. it looks like it came form the factory that way. the s10 heater boxes are fairly easy to find. the camaro/firebird ac delete box are almost impossable to find.

I couldn't agree more.

I know exactly what you are talking about and the answer is, yes you can fabricate something like that, but no one actually offers one that you can buy. If you go to BMRfabrication.com, they make them for the G-Body, but not for our cars. I asked them about making them for 3rd gens and they said the will take it up with their R&D department and get back to me.

I think it would be awesome to do (if you don't mind not having heat). It would clean the engine bay up a ton and give you a lot of room to mount things to the firewall.

Oh my, looking through old pics from 2 years ago to see if I had anything in this topic;, my how times have changed So excuse the old mess under the hood first of all and you can see the homemade box I did out of aluminum. That year I still wanted a heater, but needed maximum space for ease when changing plugs with the headers. I'm lucky since I have tons of coil stock laying around that I use to cap windows with and a break, so I put 2 and 2 together and 45min later I had a A/C delete box that worked great. It got the normal spray bomb treatment since the aluminum was white very little space taken up and I got the max room possible while still retainging the heater. Again, I apologize for the mess, but that was awhile ago. Wish I had a front shot to show how tight it was kept and how much space was gained.

Well this isnt going to be mly driver, this is gonna be the time for a r.i.c.e rocket to learn his place car, or basically the weekend car.

IHI what did you use to make that ?

Rain and fogged windows do suck, but for whatever reason when its raining i like to have the windows cracked open a bit, air feels more fresh, with a cool breeze :lala: so that takes away my fog problem

I could go without heat no problem, gives me so much more to work with, like putting gauges or switches where the HVAC controls are

I used the aluminum coil stock that is used to cap/cover the wood on homes when they are being sided or windows are being replaced. It's thin gauge aluminum and really easy to use. I cant say that I'd recommend using the little 5' rolls you can get at Menards or HomeDepot since these little rolls of aluminum are almost as thin a gauge metal as a beer can...junk. I think HD sells Rolex brand coil in the siding section of their store so you could at least get an idea of what I'm talking about. You could also go to any siding/window dealer and buy a hunk to play with, it's 2' wide and comes in 50' long rolls, lots of times these guys have half used rolls laying around and will cut ya a chunk. It was alot easeir to fab up too since I have a break for bending this stuff, I was able to bend a lip around the entire perimeter so this could be attached to the firewall. I did use body caulk to seal around where it met the blower motor and where the box hit the firewall so it was air tight and water would'nt get it when I washed under the hood. I do remember now the factory hole was huge when I got the AC box off and I did cover the opening somewhat since all the air needed was a direction to go through my box thingy. During the fall/nights is when I seen the most condensation on the windsheild and having the defroster was nice. When I redid the car last winter I took everything HVAC out as well as the sound deadner under the carpet. I have yet to have a problem with foggy windows but I dont drive in the rain with it and at the night races there is enough radiant heat coming through the carpet from the exhaust to keep the cabin cozy on high 30 degree nights wearing just a sweatshirt and the window cracked. I also installed a 12V back seat heat heater bolted to my cage but I've never needed it. It's also a little on the small side and wont heat you out if it tried, but it's there

Here's a link top what I have bolted to the cross bar on my cage. Not the prettiest, but functional. I put quick connects on the electrical ends so during the summer I can remove the heater and install my oscilating?sp fan for when I'm up in the staging lanes I'm not roasting to death in the summer heat. The wiring is hidden for the most part so if I chose to unhook the back set heat and remove the fan you could'nt tell anything was there. I cant remember the size I got, but if your were gonna drive in the winter time I would get about 2 sizes bigger. I found mine on e-bay for $40 plus shipping brand new from somebody. I really dont need it becasue of the radiant heat from my exhaust is sufficent to keep me warm, just wanted to be sure cause the midnight races always led to a little condensation on the windsheild the year before-'02. Had no problems though last year-'03.

not quite JANK things out.lol.. I did it nice.

made a template using the AC box and cut it outa sheetmetal.
Put down a silicon bead to seal it. Then rivited it in place.

I was gona leave it like this and get this heater from summit racing.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...57#largerimage

and put it under the dash where the heater core and box was. Then just wire it into the factory control ****.

but a Non AC heater box is a nice clean look also. So I picked one up cheap.

what i want its simple for the most part, just want all the crap thats taking up that room and lookin ugly gone, and flat. and i like the idea of the external heater. i never use the heater anyway, but it would be good to have for defrosting, so i like that

Damn Flrtin1, that polished aluminum on the firewall is the cats ****!! I never even gave that a thought when I did mine BUT...just imagine the entire bedcover for our S-10 made with the same stuff. I was getting blinded by the lights in the gargage drilling all the hole for the rivets, I'm scared to think what the summer sun is gonna do-hopefully throw a reflection at my opponent just before he sees the last yellow!!!

Not my car, but Jerriko's. I think it looks good.

Have I said before that I hate wasted space? Well, if I didn't, I do. I remove all remnants of the AC system from my car for various reasons except for the factory climate control box. Using a piece of 24 gauge aluminum, I fashioned an AC Delete box. The pictured delete box (top) is shown without the blower motor, resistor block, and relay bracket. I do plan on painting the box so it matches the firewall better. It also gives me a place to put all of my stickers! The bottom picture is the completed delete box. I made sure to use a temperature resistant paint since the
passenger side exhaust manifold is in the vicinity.

Just another thing to think about

HEY!!!! People who got rid of their A/C!!!

CAN I HAVE SOME OF THE PARTS?!?!?!

I am looking to install a/c as somebody just CUT the core out and I need it.....as well as the hoses, compressor and all the crap that goes with it.

If one of you guys still has your stuff, and it worked when you removed it, would you be willing to "sell" it?

Thanks!

I don't believe that the S-10 box is a direct replacement. I just got an a/c delete box from the junkyard today for $20. One thing that I didn't realize before seeing it in person is the non- A/C box is metal whereas the a/c unit is plastic. Therefore, the box will have serious rust! I'm not looking forward to cleaning mine up and treating the rust. Anyway, the S-10 box is very similar but appears to have the bolt holes in slightly different locations. Since I found one in a Camaro, I didn't bother trying an S-10 box. I found the non-A/C boxes to not be as rare as I expected. Between two junkyards, I've seen 3 of them in f-bodies (in sad shape mostly though). As far as the Chevy truck boxes go, they're everywhere

you may never plan on using the ac thats cool alot of us dont even have it any more ...but the heat is a must have you ever drivin in the rain and had the windows fog up on ya ?? it sucks and the only way to drive safely with it like that is to turn on the defrost and let it do its majic even if you dont use the heat function of it your still gonna need it to defog the windshield so you can see safely

...sorry didnt read the whole thread before i posted my fault but like alot of others said you will need heat sometimes

Try to find one in the south...nearly impossible! I have only seen ONE non-ac third gen on a dealer's lot (since 82), and it was a northern trade in that the owner got near nothing for. I have never seen one in a salvage yard. On my 87 TA, I'm welding a panel into the firewall and putting a Mojave heater under the dash.
