A hat on the carb isn't going to flow any better than an air cleaner if your hood clearance is restricted, maybe even worse. Either way you're forcing the air to make a 90 degree turn with limited clearance right above the air horn.
The open element will flow more, but it may be worth it because you wouldn't be pulling the hot air off the engine.
For that to work properly though, you'd have to find a good way to suck air from under the car or from the fender. It won't do any good to pull the air from the corner of a hot engine bay.
You can get the carb hats from pretty much all the centrifugal supercharger companies though, about $80 IIRC.

yea if i was gonna run one i would run it out that hole in the front pass fender side of my engine comp for coldest air. how much would a 90* turn hurt performance?

People use different things. Steel is much cleaner looking, and you can usually get different radii bends easier. But PCV is lighter and has much better heat dissipative characteristics. I went with PCV currently, but when I find the time I'm going to mimmick the design of my PCV one with steel. It just doesnt feel right using plastic like that
If you really wanted to get into it, you could make a mold and use fiberglass or carbon fiber. Lightweight, strong, and you can make pretty much any shape you want. Not to mention the fact that they dont retain heat very well.

Two words:
Cowl Induction Hood
Thats the original cold air intake, and still the best IMO.

i got a theory for ya guys for this!!! instead of buying a cowl hood, ultimately that is the best way.but iam too cheap. i dont know if this will pass a safety or not , but i took a 2 inch holesaw at the top of my firewall , take the plastic piece out below your wipers so you can see how far down and where is the best place to drill. and this will get rid of the cold air, it will go through the firewall and out at your windshield wipers/window.!! drill about 4 or 5, 2 inch holes and that will do quite a bit for getting rid of hot air! thats my free mod of the day! and about the cold air, i got a few pictures of someone who did it!! what they did was used a injected camaros cold air induction thing, then instead of going to the throttle body u making a a tube to connect it to the carburetor, supposedly 80's cadillacs at the junkyard, u can get a air cleaner assebly that is meant for cold air. then u just join the two!! i havent done it yet but plan to ocne i get some money!
i got osme pictures of it, but i dont knwo hwo to post them!

Here is my ram air. though it is on tbi, it will work the same for a carb. The only thing not shown in the pics are the ram air ducts, which are what really make the setup work, mainly because the tpi air cleaner is pretty restrictive.
I haven't made it to the track yet to compare the ram air to the cowl induction though.

The infamous dual snorkel will not work with an LT1 intake. It's for carb/TBI applications only.
If you're referring to r90's pics, that's just the regular TPI air cleaner, with a late-80s/early-90's Caddillac TBI hat.
