Hey guys i was looking around the carb and fab boards but couldnt find what i was looking for, i have a 92 rs that has a fresh 383 dropped in but i have the SS hood- i was thinkin- has anyone bought a air box for this hood and fabbed up a system to hook in the carb, ive seen the caps they have for the carbs for when your using a turbo or cyntrifical SC, has anyone attempted this? thanks

The SS hood--is that the single scoop in the middle of the hood? Do you have an open air element on your carb? If so, then you could fab an enclosure, so your airfilter only receives air from the scoop, the same as what the cowl induction guys have done, only the reverse. Either an enclosure around the air cleaner itself, or a flat pan attached to the hood, with a hole in it the size of your air cleaner, so the air cleaner pokes into this "airbox"--might need a riser to get the air cleaner up into the scoop, and with an X-Stream filter lid.

If you look around on these threads, you'll see what I mean. Carb is probably the easiest in terms of cold air induction. I have TBI, so carb applications work for me too. I have an open air element, soon to be ventilated by a ram air shaker scoop. Good luck! Post pix when you get a chance.

P.S. Also, the carb or TBI hats you mentioned could be used with a TPI style ram air filter box, positioned under your scoop. Not sure where your scoop opening is relative to the engine, but an open air element application might be easiest.

I have wondered about this myself. I have a cowl hood with TBI and I was thinking you could basiclly use the bottom of an open element air cleaner with some really tall foam to enclose the Throttle body. I have some friends that have done this with a 69 camaro. It had a hood scoop and a carb, but the idea was the same. The only thing I could never figure out was where to get the really tall thick foam. My friends couldn't remember where they got their foam. It would have to be fire retardant too though.

Saw pics of one setup where the guy used a sheetmetal box around the base of an open element aircleaner, and then weatherstripped the top edges of the "airbox." So he didn't need huge foam. Could use spacers to raise the aircleaner, so it sits inside the scoop. (I like the idea of the "siamesed bore" spacer, allows both banks of cylinders to draw on the intake mixture for a bit more power. Forget who makes it, but it's about 80 bucks. I think Edelbrock's "Power Gap" manifold does the same thing.)

Anyways, good luck. Still don't have my scoop yet, considering other options like the stock cowl hood, or a fiberglass one.
