A/C clutch waterpump drive

Just wondering if anyone here has ever considered modding an A/C electric clutch to fit the front of a water pump so it could be disengaged with a switch from the cockpit, for those times when a person might want to eliminate that extra drag?

Or possibly mount the electric clutch to the crank pulley, to temporarily delete all the belt driven accessories?

You don't want to stop the water pump for any reason. You will build up steam pockets in a matter of seconds. Get an electric if you are concerned.

those clutches arent designed the handle that kind of abuse.....your vastly underestimating the drag on a waterpump at RPM.

I'll take your word for that.
But It's kind of odd that I've actually seen one in use, but it was on an Italian engine.

As far as the drag on the water pump is concerned, I was assuming that the load on a AC compressor is greater than a waterpump.
Maybe not tho.

I wonder how it might work if it were adapted to the crank pulley and used to drive the PS pump and alt? Then those accessories could be disengaged separately if needed.

One of the german manufacturers did that OE for a while. And didn't they do that in one of the Madmax movies too?

It's probably from the novel of sig you have. A little more concise would be better.

It's all text, except for the tiny pic at the bottom. Text doesn't take any time at all to load. I probably should find a way to shorten it though...

Anything you see in the movies is hardly worth discussing. Because in truth, most if the stuff there is so far fetched it wouldn't even make it off the drawing board in the real world.

I did see a clutched WP drive on an Italian car. Maybe the engine was German, it was an Abarth.
It had dual Weber sidedrafts.
Actually the engine belonged to me. A guy took it out of his Alfa and gave it to me cause he owed me $$

The movie reference was just a joke, I haven't even seen that movie in probably 10+ years

I know that I have seen them on some german cars though.

I caught the joke.
I was getting concerned that this thread might start moving in that direction.

But what the hey... anyhow
I'll probably never end up making one of those things. Just wondering if anyone's ever seen one or thought about doing it.

Anyone besides Mad Max that is

If you look hard enough on the web you might find the super stallion made by ford it was a mustang with a supercharger that had a clutch type system on it to shut off the supercharger when not needed.

I've seen a nova with a AC clutch on the crank pulley, he was running an electric water pump, and is alternator and P/S were belt driven... He wired it for the clutch to be engage as soon as the key is turned on, and with the flip of a switch, it disengaged the accessories.

The guy told me he was running it on a daily basis on summer and never had slipping problem (he disemble the clutch many time to look at it the first time he was running it)...

It was doing steady 10.8 1/4 a 120+ mph all motor.

Too bad I did not have my camera that day... If I see him again, I will take pics
