custom lights

Has anyone attempted to make their own custom lights? I think someone did a conversion for fog lights a few years ago with plexi glass.

I was looking at some tail lights. My question is, if you went with just plexiglass, would it look ok and would it perform as well without all the reflective grooves built into the factory plastic lenses.

I was gonna start with something small like tails for my motorcycle before tackling something larger.

Its only going to look as good as your skills at making it. As far as looking ok, i dont really have a good idea of what all you want to change out, if you just want to do the internals, or if your talking about the whole light assembly.

If you want to do something small, change out the 3rd brake light to red LEDs, and still use the cover on them. For NICE and bright LEDs go to LSDiodes
and get some 5mm

They will beat the heck out of Radio Shacks LEDs, with twice the brightness, and almost 50% cheaper.

I'm talking about making a new housing. My concern is not so much the craftsmanship, but the appearance. I'm wondering what materials would work ok. If I were to use red acrylic plexiglass would it look ok, or be too transparent, and let you see the bulbs inside. I think that would look tacky. Part of the advantages of the "reflector" texture the stock lights have is that it also helps cut down the transparency.

I think if you were going to do it, you would want to use something that would obscure the shapes of the actual bulbs... like you said, you dont want it to look tacky. Maybe if you used a smoked plexiglass or something.

No this was a Camaro fog light, someone replaced the lenses with plexiglass.
