working on a CIA for a carb/cowl hood

im looking to replace my standard 14" round air filter with some kind of CIA, my STB prohibits a 4" round tubular style CIA, running to the front of the car somewhere so i was wondering about using the my cowl hood as my source of cold air.

Dont know much about air filter flow rates/CFM, how much i need and how to determine how much surface area i need to support my motor and hp #'s.

what i planing is to make a reverse scoop from the carb to the cowl opening. The usuable opening is 4.125"x18", and i found a flat air cleaner that is 4.125"x13.75". It will fit in the area quite well by my plans, but im unsure if it has enough surface are to supply enough air to the motor.
the scoop will be mount to the carb , transitioning form round to square internally, then widening out as it reaches the back of the hood. the scoop would be about 11" long total from the front of the carb to the rear most part of the cowl that i can locate it in without affecting the hood ability to open and close.

It will look someithing like this

Any opinion/data?
is the filter large enough?

Good idea, but I don't think that'll be enough air intake.

See if you can contact K&N to see how much CFM it can flow at a reasonable pressure drop (they MUST spec this...)

See if there's a way to cram a conical air filter in there somehow?

well, with a hard 90 right off the carb, a cone filter may fit, though i would still have to build a box around it.

Why not do the 'norm' for cowl hooded carbed cars?

I'll be doing this up soon enough, for my power bulge hood.

with that setup, i would have to pan off the entire bottom of the cowl, i was trying to avoid work on the hood. Plus its a 4" cowl, so i was trying to take advantage of all that extra space back there

Re: working on a CIA for a carb/cowl hood

I was contemplating something like this at work the other day (was in between trucks so it was slow... idle hands and all that right) and was thinking of what type of hood I want for my build. I'm thinking a 2" cowl hood (but thats another topic) Anyway, I was thinking of building sort of like a "collar" that expands past the Open Element air filter and extends back towards the firewall with some type of seal against the hood. When the hood opens the "collar" stays on the t.b. so as to not inhibit its opening or closing. Having a bit of experience in bending out light metal and some welding skill, I feel I can make it work, but untill I can get my grubby little hands on the hood for dimensions I don't know how well it will work.
