New motor is flat tappet, has no bosses, HELP

ok so i got my block all cleaned up and finally pulled the intake, i havean LT1 cam and valvetrain in the mail coming to my house and i noticed that my bock, has no bosses for the webbing to hold the lifters.

birdto jag suggested we couldfab up a mountfor the webbing, anyone have any ideas???? he said we could weld 3 nuts onto a piece of sheetmetal and secure it that way but i thought you couldnt weld cast iron??

in a bind i need some help here

TIA

Re: New motor is flat tappet, has no bosses, HELP

You bought an LT1 cam and valvetrain without knowing you have a flat tappet block? errr..... Learn from your mistakes eh?
No, cast iron is very difficult to weld to. However it's very easy to braze to. Either way, what you are asking to do is a very bad idea.

Do a search on this topic, L24 lifters is another keyword on this. Trying to shoehorn a roller cam in a flat tappet block requires some modifications that can seriously endanger your motor.

I'd just buy a flat tappet cam and go from there. Quick and dirty.

You can weld cast iron. Most people will tell you that it cannot be done but it can. If done properly.
You have to have the right rod if arc, not sure if you can mig, tig, or gas though. It's also a very expensive rod.

Just use aftermarket roller lifters that don't need the boss.

Even with retrofit rollers you have to figure out how to get a cam button to fit in the smaller bolt circle of the factory roller cam's sprocket.

i run a retro roller, the button isnt the hard part, its setting the clearance between the button and timing cover. i used a cast aluminum cover and ground it down, then put some putty on it, put it in place and measured the thikness of the putty where the button rests.

With a factory roller cam, or with a retro-roller cam?

Re: New motor is flat tappet, has no bosses, HELP

yeah, bought the motor, threw it on the stand, been wokring 40 hrs a week/ going to school 9 hrs a day mon-thurs, didnt exactly have the time to tear into the motor, i bought the motor and lt1 setup because i was told that the bosses would already be there by another member. Crappy suprise lol

im thinking of just taking it down to 5 star engine in phoenix and trading out the motor as a core for a fully machined and rebuilt roller 350, unfortunately ill need another $800 but ill have to see how things go

I also didn't see it mention, but even if you did get the 3 center bosses welded/brazed up and the cam button figured out, IIRC the block isn't machined flat enough for the 8 little plates that prevent your lifters from rotating in the lifter bore.
