Homemade Cold air/ram air Fab

I decided a little extra air going into my car would be a good thing. It wouldnt hurt would it?!?!? So I threw on the surgical gloves and went to work. I fab'd up a cold air/ram air intake and did some gutting. I will explain along with the pics as well as a future need...

Here is the front of my car. I removed the original rubber grill and left it empty. I gutted all the air and water dams from immediately below the air filters and made scoops out of aluminum vent shafts. I also added the mesh grills so it wouldnt look so exposed yet it keeps big stuff from going in.

Here is a shot looking straight through the mesh grill. You can kind of see the scoop going back and up to the air filter.

Here is a shot looking straight down from directly above. The opening is where the air filter goes. You can see the shadow of the mesh grill at the bottom of the scoop.

And here is a shot from behind.

Here is the air box from the side. (the big metal thing is for my hood pins.)
As you can see, its pretty narrow! Air just rams flat into the box and takes an immediate 90 through a very narrow slot into the plenum!

This is what I want to do next.... I want to fab the air box and make it bigger so I can get more flow through it, more volume. I need something like this, and now that I altered my hood for clearance, I have about 2 inches of room to do it.

Forgive the quality. I know it looks ghetto but I used Microsoft Paint!

So????? I was thinking of trying to melt the plastic a little bit and froming it into the shape I want but I dont know how well that will work. If I do that, I will probably try it on one from a junkyard first! OR.... Does anyone here handle fabrication and be able to make this for me? Or would anyone know where I can get it done or someone who could do this???

hmm so you just did a slide-like once than the usual full boxed-in one. Pretty cool would like to know how well it flows.

Umm with customizing the air box i wouldn't heat or melt the plastic, smells bad and is just over all a mess. I would use fiberglass to do it. Best guess would be to use a dremel to cut out the top part that your not going to want and then go to walmart get a piece of styrofoam and place it in the hole and shave it to the shape you want, then pop it out andfiber glass on the styrofoam to get the shape the you can take it off and mold it on the intake. You maybe also beable to just use sheets of fiberglass and just fiberglass over the hole you made with the dremel but i'm not sure the fiberglass would hold while drying.

Of course there is more involved then that but you get the idea.
No no no no no, they are both slides. No full box. And it flows very well! Especially on highways! I felt a pretty decent increase in power at higher speeds. And since they are aluminum, they keep the heat from the radiator away from the intake path! I definately DO NOT recommend this kind of set up if you live in an area that sees a lot of rain. I cant drive it in the rain because it just scoops right into my filters.

Yea, I got a bit tongue-tied. I edited it to what I was trying to say.
I could never put that on mine cause when it rains here it floods.

Re: Homemade Cold air/ram air Fab

I'm a big fan of using fiberglass to make custom stuff, but the resin of the fiberglass eats through stryofoam, parents weren't to happy when it a hole in their styrofoam cooler. Lol if you put sawran wrap over it that may work then after u make it and the fiberglass dries. Just take a screw driver and break the stryofoam out of it. You could also look into rigid plastic parts repair, take your original box cut it and use some plastic scraps and put em all together with the plastic repair. It's prtty much like a glue for plastic. Then to make it all smooth use the fiberglass cloth and put it over the glue so that it'll help it smooth out. Idk maybe something to look into.

Oops, sorry forgot the wrap in wax paper and/or paraffin wax part.
Can tell I'm having an off day.

I would be worried that not enough air gets to the radiator.

The plastic air dam on the under side of the car takes care of that. Besides, the fan still does its job on the radiator as well. Because of all the mods Ive done, Ive actually had less of a heat problem! More cold air coming into the intake and more cold air cooling my top end make for one cool, better running motor!

Re: Homemade Cold air/ram air Fab

nice project, i tried using and drill to brake off those little rods inside the air lid but i busted an hole thru it on the last one haha but so far its been fine, i also drilled 10 holes thru each of the air boxes so an tad more air is going thru.

sometime eventually i will get an air lid from 1bad91z, get k/n filters, and do an few more air mods and i should be good to go air flow wise (atleast tell it gets the the plenum and runners lol.

Keep up the good work!
